I was given three Plymouth Rock barred pullets the three Golden Comet pullets. I believe they are now about 8 weeks old and have a good amount of feathers. The weather here will get down into the 50s at night for the next week or so. Is it OK to put them outside in the hen house to introduce...
I don't have a rooster so I plan on buying fertilized eggs and letting a broody hen hatch them. Will she protect them from the rest of my flock and what must I do to ensure they have food inside the run? My run is 8' x 15' and I have 11 hens. My coop is 8' x 8'.
I have 7 laying hens and four young pullets. Two of the pullets were hatched the around March 27, 2018 and the other two about a month later. For the past four days I've found a very small egg in the nesting box. The egg is about 1/4 the size of the medium to large eggs I get from my older hens...
I have seven chickens that are about 2 years old. I have 5 others that are about 12 weeks old and have been integrated into the flock. The original 7 roost together on the same roost and the 5 do the same on another roost. I allow them to free range all day in my large fenced in backyard...
One of my red sexlink hens has developed a barely audible raspy voice and she has her beak open most of the time. She appears to be healthy and, I believe, is laying. However, today she seemed a bit lethargic. She is about 18 months old and my other 7 hens, about the same age, show no symptoms...
Thanks. I'm sure she's broody. It's been over two weeks that she doesn't lay and she sits all day and all night in the nesting box. If I lift her out she will squat for a few seconds then take off running and begin to do whatever the others are doing. But, she goes right back to the nest after a...
Thanks. I've sprayed her breast and bottom with a garden hose a couple of times and I've locked her out of the coop and nest boxes for most of a day but she heads for the nest box at the first opportunity. How long does a hen stay broody if you do nothing?
I'm replying to an old thread but today it appears that one of my hens layed two eggs. I have 8. My two legurns lay white eggs. My two red sex links lay medium sized dark brown eggs. My EE lays a green egg. My Brahma lays a dark brown egg with raised brown spots. My Australorp lays an egg that...
I said earlier that my EE layed two days in a row and then took off a day. Well, that has changed. She has now layed six days in a row. Today she layed when it was nearly dark. I thought that was unusual.
Mine was hatched the end of March or first of April and layed her first egg on January 15th. But she's a good layer now. She's given me 14 eggs in the 19 days since she began and her eggs are extra large. She may do better than that when the days get longer.
I used to be able to tell who layed which egg. But, now that winter is here and a couple stopped laying and couple started laying I'm having a heck of a time determining who layed what between my Brahma mix, my gold laced Wyandotte, and my two red sex links. The EE and my Australorp are so...
I have a gold laced Wyandotte (Goldie) and I've been trying to figure out which eggs are hers. I'm 90% sure she's laying and your egg is similar to what I've found in my nest box but I wasn't sure who was laying it. Perhaps the mystery is solved.
