It would be more of a hobby project. If anything, my goal would be to just create a better meat bird for roosters I can't use. Marans have superior meat taste, but Bielefelders grow very quickly. May toss in some Barbezieux later on to further improve flavor and see what I get. Thanks for the...
Am I correct in thinking that my BCM rooster over my Bielefelder hens will create black sex-linked chicks? Also, is it possible to breed the offspring selectively until they are fully autosexing, like Bielefelders? If so, how would this be achieved? What traits in the offspring would I need to...
We do breed in a sense, but we don't buy dogs just for breeding purposes and run a massive operation. I've just always had German Shepherds as my pet of choice, so we have 2 as our personal pets which have great genetics, so we just don't separate them when it's that time. As for...
Thanks for the suggestion! I've already seeded the area inside and around the coop with grass and clover. That should cut down on the mud as well as give the chickens some tasty forage material. And yes, those 2 pups are actually from our most recent litter. They're waiting on homes, so I let...
Putting the finishing touches on the new coop. It has a sliding coop door, multiple windows and vents to open/close depending on the season, a hatch for the clean out tray, and 2 German Shepherd puppies to watch over its new inhabitants
My Svart Honas started laying today, and I received my first ever SH egg. The egg is relatively small compared to other first eggs from pullets that I keep, but then again the Svart Honas themselves are smaller than my other breeds. This SH egg is oddly round. Is this just because it's a pullet...
Mine are 6 months old now and I've noticed the same behavior. When they're free ranging, they'll randomly dart to one spot to another and shortly after start scratching about like normal again. Sometimes the hens even chase each other (not in an aggressive manner, you would almost think they...
Not trying to contradict you, but I received 12 day old chicks from GFF in August and they have been free ranged with no special care and I haven't lost one or had any issues with frailness or sickness. They are pretty hardy in my experience
