I used to have a ladder style roost with 5 rungs on it that sat on the floor and leaned against the back wall. I replaced it with two longer 2X4s suspended by solid 2x4's from the ceiling. One is lower than the other so that the older, fatter birds can fly up easier. Accomplished two things...
Mine is on the interior and slides. I have it on a rope and pulley so it can be opened from the door.
Something I've been wondering is if I had put it about 4' off the ground and had a small landing, would I need to close it at night? My birds could easily get in and out and it would be hard...
I give mine the left over watermelon rhines and they clean it down to the very outer skin. They love it even better if there is some fruit and seeds left.

I have all kinds of breeds. About 20 hens all together. I went from averaging a dozen a day to 1 - almost overnight. I know I need to get my light and timer set back up but I've been busy and I don't mind giving their body a break. For some reason, they are picking up the pace again.
