So exciting to hear you are doing a study. I will be very interested as I have started trying to breed the broody trait back into the Japanese quail.
I started off with 3 females in a 150x80cm enclosure. Lined with wood shavings and a large platform that they can go up on for food and water (no...
So an update. We continued to incubate the eggs after our broody quail gave up. 5 has hatched so far. My friend has an unusually broody quail which pretty much broods all year round so I borrowed her quail. Took it home and placed it with the chicks. 10min later, she was brooding them! Just...
So my Japanese quail decided to be broody again after giving up after 5 days last time. The only problem is she became broody while my male quail was in quarantine. When I placed him back, he hassled her so much she fled her nest. I threw out those eggs she brooded for a few days. But it didn't...
I just tried that! It's amazing! Having tried using a torch with not much success, I used the iPhone at 5 days and could see the blood vessels! That's with a spotty cortunix egg!!!! Thank you!!
That's great news for spook. Funny our kids named one of our quails Flower, too.
She's been back on her nest since late last night. Probably dead as it was only the 5th day but we will see I guess.
UPDATE - sad news. She moved her eggs to another location, sat on them for half the day then gave up . I noticed them cold a few hrs later. I have taken half of them and they will sit in the incubator. Hopefully they might keep going? The other half I left in case she changes her mind. Though...
Hope so. The wait is killing me. It's only day 5. There was a storm last night. I was worried it might spook her but it didn't! Still sitting this morning!
The enclosure is large but she's in an odd spot. The other 3 quails don't seem to be bothering her. I have now marked 7 eggs and have been taking away new ones that she gathers. It's her first clutch so I want her to do a good job with a small number.
I know what you mean. I have had 6 female Japanese quails in my quail keeping lifetime (1yr) and 2 has been broody. One is brooding right now and the other was unfortunately killed by my dog before it had a chance to raise a batch. 2 out of 6 does not suggest it's too rare. I am now on a mission...
Welcome
A few have mentioned that given enough space and good low hiding spots, the quails go broody more often. Oh and also a solid floor. I have all of those factors in my coup and 2 of my quails have gone broody at different times. My dog unfortunately took out the first one. But 2 broody...
