    new Zealand rabbit genetic question

At the D locus, a red would have at least one copy of the full color D (two copies would make it a fawn, or a cream, or some such (the name varies, but it would be a very diluted shade, clearly not red). What's going on at the B locus depends on the breed you are talking about. The Mini Rex...

It's a bit absurd, really. Anyone else remember when this pipeline went down some years ago? Wilmington actually fared pretty well though that; we have fuel coming in through the port all the time, so we just became a busier distribution point than we had previously been. The tank farm down at...

Why Does This Bunny Have So Much Fur in Her Mouth?

As others have said, she's pulling fur for a nest. That is her fur; with a rabbit that is her color, there is black at the tips of the hairs, then a lighter band, and nearest the body it is a light gray color. If that dead baby is hers, she may just be an incompetent or inexperienced mother...

Mornin', y'all! :frow Hubs and I joke that when the saucer magnolias bloom, that's a signal that we are about to get one more freeze . . . . Yup, right on time. The blueberries are in full bloom. This is probably going to make a mess for the local strawberry growers; it may put...

Can two rabbit Bucks live in peace?

Putting an unfamiliar male rabbit into territory already owned by an intact adult male is usually a recipe for disaster. Males can be very territorial, especially when it comes to rival males. However. If the established rabbit is a very laid-back, non-assertive individual, and the new rabbit...

Giant rabbit had one dead kit

If a doe only conceives one or two kits, she will often deliver a few days past her due date (day 34 or 35, rather than the normal 31). The babies continue to grow during the extended gestation, so they often wind up huge, and the difficulty of birthing them means they seldom survive. If I have...

Just a heads-up - if their dam is a broken, one or both of them may be, so you might see some broken babies. ;)

    Rabbit Colours

You've given your location as Washington, so I'm not sure why you are spelling "colors" with a "u." The reason I mention that, is because in the U.S (where we spell it "color"), we consider Agouti to be a pattern and not a color, while in some other countries (where they may use the alternate...

    The Old Folks Home

Yeah. I woke up about 1 a.m. to wind and thunder, and checked the radar picture. There were storm cells to the west and east of us, traveling more or less north. I'm not sure which one was responsible for the twister, but if it had happened just half an hour later, it would have been in a much...

I keep seeing these posts about the weather, and am having a real "count your blessings" moment. I took this on my back porch a few minutes ago: That's not a pond in the background, it's my pasture, which is underwater again, again, again. We got about 2" of rain last night; I keep telling...

    Bunny sexing

By 4 months, it should be pretty easy to tell, even if you don't have the technique of pressing in the right spot figured out. By 4 months, the males should have fairly well developed testicles. Rabbits' testicles can be pulled back into their bodies, even with mature males, but there would...

    Breeding New Zealand Rabbits

Since Chestnut isn't a showable color in NZ's, it appears to me that someone hasn't been trying to keep color lines separate (at least in the case of the buck). That being the case, you could get virtually any color in the NZ rainbow. As has been previously said, your best chance is for Black...

    Is this animal abuse?

It is a subject about which a lot of people feel passionately, and passion often leads to arguments and hurt feelings . . . which is something we try to avoid here. Hence, the prohibition. :idunno Goats trying to escape is perfectly normal goat behavior, which is why so many goat owners have...

    Is this animal abuse?

Y'all may not be aware of this, but animal rights (and animal rights groups) are a subject to be avoided on BYC. Like cockfighting, it's just not a thing we talk about, one way or the other. If some of the above posts disappear, that will be why. It would be a good idea to move the conversation...

    what color bunnies are these?

As someone who has bred Mini Rex for more than 30 years, I can assure you, this won't work. Rufous may be considered a modifier, but it is a gene (or rather, a polygene), and if you haven't got the genes to make it happen, it won't. Granted, you might just luck out and buy an animal of another...

    what color bunnies are these?

By this logic, Steel is just a dark Chestnut, or Orange just a poorly colored Red. :idunno Anyone who is trying to breed showable Castors will never, ever get there breeding Chestnuts, they need to know the difference.;)

    what color bunnies are these?

Castor and Chestnut are not the same thing. Castor is Chestnut plus the rufous modifiers. The deep, rich color of the Castor is only achieved with extra yellow/red pigment from the rufous modifiers; without them, what you have is a Chestnut (an unshowable color in both the Rex and Mini Rex)...
