    Fox problem

There are battery powered chargers on the market, & some of them have built in solar panels. The one I use takes 4 C cells.

    Fox problem

Foxes are very smart and difficult to trap, but an electric fence should work. There are plenty of YouTube videos on how to set one up. The idea is to teach the critters to respect the wire, so you can hang strips of bacon or other bait on the wire so they get a good jolt.

Thank you for the great post. Which tranquilizer did you use again? I think with my 10 lb Cochin roos, we should start practicing a couple of months before the show.

What I learned about Cochins. This is our first Cochin, and he's turned into a real bully. He's the size of a small turkey, and nobody dares turn their back on him. Cochin hens are supposedly very broody. Our supplier uses them to hatch turkey and duck eggs, but the downside of that is they tend...

Small farm in BC. She will only ship live birds to BC and Alberta but flies eggs in Canad. She does show her birds and has some nice stock. We have a dozen eggs ordered for Spring. $60/doz + ExpressPost Shipping across Canada. She has some light Blues and Splash, which match with what we have...

    LEG BANDETTES? Where to purchase?

I found lots of clip on bands on eBay and Amazon, but the numbered bandettes are hard to find. Strombergs has them but they're expensive. I just need some way of separating my chickens from the neighbor's so I will probably go with a loud colored clip on.

Topic of the Week - Getting Started, Keeping Chickens

As a noob, I have little to offer except: I would stay away from the hybrid egg layers unless you are willing to replace them every year or so. We really wanted to start with a general purpose bird like Orpingtons, but we finished the coop in the Fall and there wouldn't be any pullets until...

You will be busy. We're not there yet, but we have talked about getting Boots cleaned up and taking him to the show up the road if there's time. Our aim right now is to get a few birds and see how they do down here, plus see if we can raise some chicks of our own.

We looked far and wide and finally found a hobby farm in BC that will ship eggs. They show their birds and have good lines, although we may have to wait until they get eggs. They are also a reasonable price, which is good for noobs like us that have NO idea what we're doing! They list blues...

Meet Boots, our first LF Cochin and our first roo. We started with a few brown eggers, but we thought if we added a rooster, he would keep the girls rounded up if we let then free range. Our neighbor's birds are all over the place, and we thought a roo would at least get them home, instead of at...

    Rats

I've managed to trap 3 this year, mainly by being patient, and setting them up. Got 2 with the old style Victor traps, and one in a live trap. Trick is to leave the Victor traps un set but baited (I used old cat food) until the rats eat the bait. Then set the trap and bang! Use rubber gloves...

    Rats

Terriers are amazing, and mine get 3 or 4 a year. Problem is, rats are fast, and they know the territory, and their first instinct is to dodge under someplace the dogs can't go. What the dogs do is keep the gene pool clean.
