I've noticed that the sick chicken has a large crop (see photo) even though she is not eating. My other chickens do not have an enlarged crop. Any advice? Also, I bought some Aureomycin, but haven't used it yet.
I have a sick 10 month old hen with the following symptoms:
1) Listless
2) Yellow foamy poo
3) Pasty butt
4) Change is posture (arched back)
5) Stopped laying about two weeks ago
6) Vent looks OK
I could use some advice. From what I've read in the forum, it could be worms. Also, it started...
Thanks for all the input.
I have another dilemma. The chickens are digging up the grass around the edges of the run. I am moving the coop once a day. Do I need to put down wire mesh on the bottom? If so, what size. The 2x3 wire mesh on the sides of the run might be too big an opening to...

This is my chickens first night in the coop. I hope they don't get too cold. The roosts are 2x4s which don't conduct heat very well. The sides are perforated aluminum with about 50% open area (staggered 3/16 holes). The floor is plastic grating, soon to be wood dowels when I get...
I just became enlightened about the whole Ameraucan vs. EE issue. I guess my two "Ameraucanas" are actually mongrels. According to the Ameraucan Breeders Club, "Perhaps 99 percent of chickens sold as Araucanas (or Ameraucanas) by commercial hatcheries are actually mongrels (aka Easter Egg...
JudyMcKinn,
The low temperatures at night during the winters months can get down to the 30s (rare). Do I need to worry about wind draft protection? If not, maybe I will just use mesh for the coop, instead of the more expensive perforated aluminum sheets. What do you think? Will the hens...
JudyMcKinn,
I plan on using perforated aluminum sheets for the sides of the coop (the run will have wire cloth):

During the winter months, I plan on using heavy duty clear plastic film for the coop...
Flufnstuffs~FluffySilkies,
Thanks for the advice. I ended up using my wife's eye medicine. I need to create a first aid kit like you. I wonder what the shekf life is for all the medications? I plan to order the medicine online and have it ready for the next emergency.
How is her eye doing...
Thanks for all the feedback.
You might consider moving the wheels forward, to the middle of the house.
I originally had the wheels designed in the middle, but figured that coop is so light (about 25 pounds without the wire mesh) that I would move them forward to maneuver over bumps more...
I am currently designing a portable chicken coop for my new flock (4 weeks old). See attached pictures. It will be made out of welded aluminum angle (1'x1'x1/8"). The coop is 3'x3'. The run is 3'x7'. It has two nesting boxes that are 12"x12". I will update with pictures when I am done...
I have a 4 week old Bared Rock that has an eye problem. I am not sure if it was caused by pecking from another chicken or just an infection. Please see photo. I am raising 6 chickens (my first time). I have quarantined the chicken. Any suggestions such as eyes drops or ointments?
Thanks,
Matt
