So, it's situated on solid cement. So probably no digging.
I was thinking snake. The wire mesh - I believe - is 1/2 inch.
Would a snake get through that?
I do not see any openings at all otherwise.
Thanks!
We're trying to figure out what to do next.
I'm just not sure what we're up against...
Okay so
we had a momma hen hatch five eggs a few weeks ago.
We put her in a place that is usually pretty safe.
Two chicks went missing.
got a small coop.
Coop is comprised of hardware wire, spring latches. It's wood. It's heavy.
Everything has been fine for the last two weeks.
Last night...
Oh yes and as for cats, yep. We have one male cat who goes outside and catches rodents.
In fact last week I caught him munching on one.
More cats is on the agenda.
Thank you both for the condolences. We were super bummed.
Yeah, the feed has definitely attracted them. And having it left out during the night has been an issue.
That is definitely the first thing we latched onto. The issue is that the darn things chewed holes and dug up through cracks in...
Sorry it took so long for me to respond the week went from bad to worse.
That duckling was gone the next morning. And the morning after that the week old duckling was gone.
Score.
We think rats. Long story short, we're now looking at how to both get rid of the rats and secure the coop.
We...
Yeah he looked like he was breathing okay, whistling, moving pretty well. Had a lot of room, just down there that yolk was still there.
OK, I feel way better. I am crossing my fingers this little critter does well, his/her sib is waddling around looking for someone to play with LOL.
Thank you!
Okay thats what I was wondering, if the momma duck was pulling that shell back. I was a little worried she was getting weird about things.
How long would you wait before getting more worried? What might we look for?
The little guy was whistling loudly, so that was a good sign.
Hey guys.
So .... we have a strange situation.
We have a momma duck who has been sitting on her eggs religiously for the last two months. Long story short: yay she finally hatched a baby about four days ago. He/she's doing well. Yesterday, another egg started pipping. This morning is where it...
Oh yeah, we've been talking about that for a while now. We have a little more than half an acre, maybe 3/4 roughly. We're thinking a pond with a pump (?) Not sure. But a kiddie pool comes first. We're surrounded by mass farming so we'd like to sort of 'wild' the place just a bit. Get a bit more...
atm it's working but I'm thinking rather quickly we'll need to sort them. They're small enough that keeping water available at the right depth is working. They're getting along very well. However, my guess is that soon they'll be happier if they have a bit more water for splashing in. They got...
Well this isn't quite the same but.... we had 9 chicks and then yesterday added 4 ducklings. They're snoozing together :) I mean literally they cuddle together, get up, eat, drink, stretch. Cuddle back together. I'm guessing your chicks should do ok.
I don't think I've ever seen such cuteness.
Chickens are so smart. Seriously.
Especially if you have a few they'll know where to get the food, where to get the water, and how to stay warm.
I always used to think chickens weren't so clever then we acquired a couple of roosters and holy cow did I learn quite a bit.
Cute birds!

We're Lenawee county residents, not totally new to the chicken game but not super experienced.
Just picked up 9 chicks a couple days ago, and 4 ducks yesterday. All from TSC.
3 Silver lace, 3 Jersey, 3 banties, and 4 Rouens.
Am interested in getting maybe two...
Thank you so much for the warm welcome and suggestions.
I have them in my closet in my room (in a box.. ha)it's the hands down safest place for them atm. Between curious dog, and cats and drafty house (such is the dilemma for living in a field lol) we put them in there. Loud suckers. Ha. But...
Hello.
Not totally new to chickens at this point.
Moved to a rural-ish section of south-east Michigan in 2016.
By early fall of this last year we acquired two roos both white/black. They were dumped on the side of the road just down a bit from our house. Both white/black, our best guess is...
