Also (and I'll stop here)... when I installed the feeder, I moved the watering plumbing to the rear so that the nipples come in from the back of the coop. This gives more room for the birds and allows the feeder to fit too. The feeder bucket is in front of the 5 gallon bucket outside of the coop.
That last picture shows the predator proofing of the bottom of the shelf that I built. I installed hardwared cloth to the top and bottom of that shelf so there are two layers of it separated by the width of 2x4 treated lumber. The shelf is over-engineered for sure, with 4x4 legs. It is heavy...
Friends--My work and family has me too busy to attend to my coop as I should, so I'm offering it all up for free to someone LOCAL who can pick it up. I still have a handful of adult female egg layers that should continue to produce for you (I get about an egg per bird per day year-round). I've...
I like the look of your feeder using that square, clear tub! I am using one that I made from a square bucket with only one feeding "port," and I'm using it with quail. I have zero waste. I can't even imagine how my birds could waste seed if they wanted to, other than taking some in their...
I'm no expert at this GrannyJen, and luckily for me, I have not experienced any soft shells like what you describe. Others here certainly know more than I do, and hopefully some of them will chime in. But from what I've read, I suspect you have a couple of things going on.
First, quail...
Thanks for the tip about molting at 8 weeks Geniash, and the journal idea Zed! I had read about the light idea Keith, and I may resort to that at some point. I was just puzzled how I went from 1 egg/day, to 2, then 4, and then 8....only to drop back down to 1 again. All within a few of weeks...
Well, I can't explain it. I was getting multiple eggs per day with no artificial light except for a thermostat controlled red heat lamp. Now I'm down to 0-1 per day.
My latest batch is going to hard boil tonight. Notice the odd-ball white one???
I'm in Michigan. Since my last post, my hens stopped laying almost entirely. I did catch a coupe of them eating an egg almost immediately after it came out of one of the birds --now I fear they have a taste for egg protein and will simply be live egg recyclers. I put in a couple of fake eggs...
Well, my earlier concerns were certainly due to immaturity. I've been getting a steady increase in production, and today I found this!
Yup-8 quail and 9 eggs. Someone's an overachiever today!
I have a coop with 8 female coturnix that are about 8 weeks old. The Coop is big enough for 10-12 birds, going by the 1 sq foot per bird rule. It has a "downstairs" and ramp leading to an "indoor-upstairs" section and all birds have access to it all.
Would I be able to add 2 - 4 button quail...
Congrats on your new quail! I am just a few steps ahead of you--with 8 quail that I've had for only a few weeks now. Mine were 5 weeks old when I got them from a local breeder. I'm getting 3-4 eggs per day now, and they are great little birds. I ended up finding a bargain on a "rabbit hutch"...
No new birds being introduced, and they're all experiencing the same weather fluctuation. Given the update from yesterday (3 eggs!) I gather it's just an age thing, and there was some age variability among this little flock.
Copy that Jenni. That's why I replied--so us newbies can share our knowlege! I'm still at the office today, but my kid texted me that we have 3 new eggs again today. Wohoo!
While this thread didn't get many views, in case anyone is curious... yesterday we pulled 3 eggs from the hutch, so apparently a couple other quail started laying. I'm gonna assume that one of these birds is from a different set of eggs, and thus a couple of weeks older than the rest of them.
Thanks robdog. I suspected as much, but since I only seem to have (can't confirm or deny it) one active laying hen, and I'm so new at this, the though occurred to me that maybe there is some sort of "flock" dynamics that nature sets up--like the alpha dog in a pack.
These birds are really...
