Good day,
We have 9 2mo old chickens in a 6x7x7 coop (which is built inside a large out building.) They are heated by one 125w lamp. I want to let the poor guys out in the run, which we were doing anytime it was 50f and above.
It hasn't reached 50f in a week now (Ohio), but I am...
We have 9 8wk old chicks that are big and fat and acting like they are trying to find nesting places in groups.
The coop is 6'x8' with a door to a 9'x15' run.
Plan to build 3 16"x16"x16" nesting boxes today.
1: How high off the floor should they be?
2: are 3 of these enough for 9 hens...
Thanks everyone for the info. Just one more question, when can we start feeding them lettuce, corn, or other table scraps? Are there certain things to avoid? I've read that once they start laying (we have a while I know) to not feed them garlic, onions, or peppers or you'll end up with...
Also, I do not know the age at all. I know most can fly up 18" and over 2-3' if that helps.
There are 9 chicks in a 6x8' coop with a ceiling at 4.5'-7'.
Does it hurt to leave them to the coop for another month?
So just 8days ago we got chicks at the store. They have taken to the coop very well, and I now notice they are going to the plexiglass where a run will be and looking out at times.
East-Central Ohio: 50/30 temps right now. Considering I get the run built in the next week, how soon can I let...
Ok, so the chicks are in and comfy! So now it's onto a run :D
9 chicks in a 1930's 200hen coop. The old run is no more, would like some insight into a new design. Am thinking a wood floor for cleaning, and covered of course. Here are some pics of what we're working with.
I am thinking a...
Thanks for the input. Day 3 in the coop and they are quite happy chicks moving around as they should. We have a good generator if power fails. GLAD WE SET TRAPS! We've caught a ground mole every night on the dirt floor beside the coop! The coop has a sealed raised floor.
My concern...

^ We have some more pics of the farm if you want to see. We are currently rebuilding the 33' windmill, finished the trolley clothesline.. other odd stuff :)
Some windows would be nice. Before the chicks go in today I plan to cut a new door for the run, and use plexiglass to reseal it for winter. Then they will get some light, and I won't have to sawzaw a hole with a bunch of chickens running around.
The current heat lamps are putting the floor...
Here are the requested pics, and one of the current in-house brooder. Not sure if these are for laying or meat or whatnot... just got one at the store for my wife Tuesday... then it really didn't being alone, so we bought 2 more. Would like to go get a handful more once this in-coop coop is...
We have a 100w heated waterer so not to freeze. We have two light cause what if one burns out at 11pm and we don't find out till 10am and it's in the teens..... scary thought....
Good day to all,
After reading some on humidity and frostbite due to lack of ventilation in the coop, can someone tell me if we will be ok? 16hrs till we transfer them out to the coop in east-central Ohio.
Building is a 20x40' coop with the new coop being in a corner and 5x7'. Ceiling in...
Just went out and put the lamps on for a good overnight, but it is 38 right now so I'll have to figure out how to adjust if need be. Lamps are currently at 2.5feet to the floor and focused on the same spot.
Haha! The cats love these chicks and will sleep for weeks when they are gone in...
