Our girls are very tame (except Betty the white one who started off living up the road but decided to move in with our chooks) but I was surprised how well they accepted it.
Well my Amherst changed between the age of 13 months to 15 months of age. Mine did it in several stages. The next time your bird moults his new colours will come through. I don't think you have anything to worry about.
Hi,
As well as Chooks I also have a large aviary I like to call "The Pheasantasiam"
The Pheasantasiam holds is currently home to Lady Amherst Pheasants, Cockatiels, Turquoisines (Grass Parakeets), Coturnix Quail, Ringneck Doves (Barbary Doves), and Java Sparrows (Finches).
Below is a video of...
It is strange when they change. It is so quick! Mine only took about 6 weeks from brown to amazing. Problem is he is frightened by his own hood, he thinks something is touching the back of his head so he tries to get away from it or attacks it.
When we got our Lady Amherst Pheasants we thought they might pick on Bert & Ernie (Our pair of male Coturnix Quail)... but what really happened...? Check out this video to find out.
Below are 3 videos showing my Lady Amherst Male (Brucie) morphing from his drab brown colours to his spectacular adult plumage. The videos are in Chronological order.
Thanks for your advice -it worked a treat. We just have to catch them every night - they are getting quicker! No quail on our menu (not that i would ever contemplate eating a pet)
Cheers,
Daisy
Do male amhersts only crow during the mating season? Also, do they crow early in the morning and late at night? How often per day? I don't want to upset the neighbours, and all the other birds :)
