Our Tom, Pretty boy, took a lot of getting used to. He's a one year old bourbon red and we got him about four months ago so he was good sized. I'd never been around a bird that large so I was very nervous. So far he's been a doll but his mate, cici, is a terror. She hisses any time I collect...
Wow... pretty much everything in my yard is deadly. They pretty much stay away from it all aside from the occasional nibble though. The only thing out of an entire vegetable and flower garden that's been cleaned was my rabbit eye blueberry bush, they even ate the leaves.
I'm sorry, that's what I get for messaging while putting kids to bed and thinking of too many things. I have two buffs hens and lavenders in together. They would be mixed in with those so I wasn't sure if they would still throw some mauve coloring.
I was gifted a btw and a btb by a friend a few years ago as they weren't sop. I bred the btw to a small Leghorn hen before neighbors dog got him. They produced a hen that's the right size but the body is too long. She is one of my best layers and happens to be the favorite of my btb. I bought an...
I was given these as a Valentine's gift. And wow, do they look different now.
This is my favorite, gimpy, terrible name but it stuck because of the crooked toes I was unable to fix.
Got this little guy off my serama roo and silkie X Cochin hen. He has five toes and lightly feathered legs. He's a week old now and tinier than my serama chicks. She's sitting on some more so I should have a few juveniles in a couple months.
Ignore her choice of nesting box, that's a six inch...
I hatched an egg off my blue copper marans hen and my mix roo yesterday and it seemed fine and normal. I moved everybody out to the brooder today and noticed it wasn't putting weight on its leg. The two outside toes are grown together but it's getting around enough to eat and drink on its own...
Where are you located? I hit the jackpot with a woman in macclenney, FL. She has very dark eggs and large birds. I bought two dozen and so far 17/23 are on lockdown. I dropped one while loading the turner. About half were an 8 or 7 with 2 maybe 3 being a close 9. I paid thirty for them which if...
Thank you for the tips! I knew gff was southern but they have some pricey lines so I figured they'd have state of the art equipment. I'll be building a 50X20 pole barn across the back halves of my breeding pens this summer with electric so the turkeys have an accessible fan and everyone has more...
Thank you! I wasn't sure since her eggs were light. After a few days off she lays a six on the colour scale but then they lighten back up. She is what started me on my love of marans and chicken genetics in general.
Hi there! My step-mother and I are looking to split a hatch of these sometime at the end of the year and I was wondering if anyone has had them in Florida? I'd love to have them but I keep finding conflicting info on their heat tolerance. Step mom lives in southern Indiana so I think they would...
He was by far the prettiest rooster I've ever had and if I get a chance I'll definitely breed them again. I don't mind them normally but this one was a menace. It took nine birds in a week before we trapped it. Now I keep my hound outside patrolling and make sure everyone goes up at night.
Agreed! I'm a stay at home mom to a one and four year old so having a few peaceful moments watching the chickens, hunting the eggs and digging up critters at the end of the day for the hens is the best. It's so calming and rewarding.
