    Goats got a grumbling gut

Hi! Glad you have 40 yrs of experience! I just read your comments on an old post about 2 goats being too skinny. I just took in 2 young females, one pregnant, one milking, and after getting the chart on body condition I realize they are both too skinny! They must eat a pound or so of grain...

Very concerned now!!! Updated with video in 3rd post. 2 yo sex link hunched and can't get on roost

The first night of her illness, I was happy that next morning that she was still up on the roost and had not fallen. Below her in the litter was a soft egg, but she roosted next to another older girl who I have suspected was the one dropping the soft eggs, so I can't say even now that I was...

Very concerned now!!! Updated with video in 3rd post. 2 yo sex link hunched and can't get on roost

If I had some way of euthanizing her on my own, I'd do that to help end her suffering. But, chopping off heads is something that disturbs me deeply... for any living thing. It feels so very, very wrong in my heart and soul... heads are so personal, in fact, really they are the location of our...

Very concerned now!!! Updated with video in 3rd post. 2 yo sex link hunched and can't get on roost

I am very sad to say that my older rescue hen is succumbing to death right now for some reason similar to this. 3 days ago I was digging in the garden, and 3 of my hens were by my side ready to grab any bug they could find while I dug. She is always one of those 3, loves to get the easy meal...

    Please read about Diatomaceous Earth

Given recent conversations (as always on pet/chicken forums) about Diatomaceous Earth and its safety, I happen to be browsing medical sites to find answers to my own thoracic interstitial problems, and I fell upon this paragraph (cited below). I want to share this because even though a chickens...

A silkie on 16 fertile eggs found today - mid-November!

I guess she may have resolved this whole issue herself. I moved her and the eggs off the floor into a storage tote nest that had clean litter... this morning she was back on the floor and the eggs were super cold in the nest. :( Doubt any will develop now.. for the best, I guess, but at least...

A silkie on 16 fertile eggs found today - mid-November!

I don't know if any of the eggs are hers, but several are tiny white eggs. I do have several hens young enough to start laying, so it is hard to say. Some could be hers, some could be Hamburg eggs but I haven't seen either of those hens laying any as of yet. I also have a few young EE mixed...

A silkie on 16 fertile eggs found today - mid-November!

I will have to search for that post, or that product. Definitely didn't want this task right now.. too much else to do like getting the adult chickens and their coops ready for winter. SIGH! Should I just remove the eggs from her - I mean, something is growing in them, but they probably are...

A silkie on 16 fertile eggs found today - mid-November!

Bad time to get broody in the Northeast -- we are headed into winter! I somehow missed this nest, and now 13 of them are already developing! She is not big enough to cover 13 babies once they hatch, in fact 3 might be all she could cover cause my frizzle is the same size and still with her 3...

    Worrisome chicken poop

I've read no straw for bedding, as it can clog up their digestive tract and cause inability to move food, or, I guess clogged up poops. I use wood shavings only, or leaf/pine litter raked from the ground. Make sure they have grit or access to very tiny rocks.

Any good chicken owners in need of some nice-looking roosters for pets/flock guarding? I have 3 young red barnyard mix roosters, and a couple of polish/houdan mix roosters someone may want for fertilization of same breeds (black and white). $5 each, or a trade for a young egg-layer. To good...

Unrefrigerated fertile egg yolks break easily and seem soupy

I did just get a multi w/ probiotics for their water... wondering how effective it is when it sits in the sun all day (or heat, for that matter). I use the Nutri-Wise Hearty Hen w/ 16% protein for layers, and now also give them a whole grain organic feed (peas, wheat, corn, oats, alfalfa, vits...

how long can you leave eggs out unrefrigerated?

Hi, thanks for posting back to me! I do store them in cartons point down, yes, and they are never more than 3 weeks old at most because I have several people taking them. I only recently learned of the counter storage options, so have only started leaving them unrefrigerated for the past...

Unrefrigerated fertile egg yolks break easily and seem soupy

But, putting unwashed eggs in cooler temps (fridge temps) will draw in bacteria, right?

Unrefrigerated fertile egg yolks break easily and seem soupy

Wow, really? So could the warm weather also have the same effect? But most of us leave our eggs out unwashed for even a few weeks, don't we? Does it spoil the yolks at all?

In Whitefield.. hello neighbors! I've been told by everyone so far that the chickens adjust to the winter weather just fine and are better off without added warmth, such as if you use a heater and there is a power outage then they will not be used to the cold, and they will get too cold and...

Unrefrigerated fertile egg yolks break easily and seem soupy

I need to find out why my unwashed/unfridged egg yolks are so loose and immediately break and run once I crack the shell? None of my unwashed eggs have ever made it past 3 weeks of age, and I wondered if that was too long. But, I just scrambled some from within the last week and they too had...
