Black Walnut Tree Mulch - Safe?

Hi! I’m looking into getting natural mulch for my chicken run. I know black walnut trees can be toxic to gardens but what about using the tree as mulch in a chicken run? Toxic to them? Toxic to my garden that is close by? Not worth the risk? Thanks!

Bumblefoot Year 2 - Update and Advice Needed!

Yes it is. No thanks for your help!! Do you know what height chickens can safely get down from? I’m not worried that maybe she is jumping too hard from the coop to the run and not using the ramp.

Bumblefoot Year 2 - Update and Advice Needed!

They’re just typical TSC roosts that came with the coop - probably 2 or 3 inches wide, slightly rounded - not really above the ground at all. Like the girls have to get up into the coop from the run but the roosts are almost on the floor of the coop

What is this?? Normal scab, bunblefoot, something else?? HELP!

Hi everyone, I noticed this scab on my chicken who has classic Bumblefoot in her other foot. But this looks different..? Is it still Bumblefoot or a healthy scab or even something else? This is the second year in a row she’s had Bumblefoot and I’m totally at a loss.

What breed or gender? Approx. 8 weeks

Hi everybody! I bought four “heavy pullets” from TSC and I just wanted to make sure this one is a female and also ask anyone’s expertise on what breed she may be. I’m sure pretty sure the other 3 I got are a barred rock and two like red sex link chicks but with her I’m stumped! She was a smoky...

Bumblefoot Year 2 - Update and Advice Needed!

Has anybody else have this happen to them? I had four chickens for 2 years without a SINGLE case of bumblefoot. All four of them were older girls (I got them older as a new chicken owner) and 3/4 passed away over the last year or so. Then, last year, I added 2 girls into the flock - so basically...

    Need Advice - Bumblefoot!

Hi everyone! I have my first case of bumblefoot and I need a bit of advice. I've done a ton of reading about treating (with surgery and removing the scab) and preventing it for the future but I'm not quite sure what to do with this case and don't want to do it wrong! So the story: three days...

    Who Laid This Egg?

Hi everyone! So I have a mixed flock of 2 red sex link hens (about 4 years old), a 6 month old Ameracauna rooster, and a 6 month old Welsummer hen. My rooster's comb and wattle are very bright red and though he hasn't been crowing, he's definitely started to assert his dominance (at least over...

    New Chicken Owner Questions

Hi guys! So I've had four two-year-old chickens for about two weeks now and just have some general questions about their looks/behaviors. All four are red sex-link hens. Okay, so the first thing I've noticed/questions is some missing feathers on only one hen's lower neck/upper breast region...

    BYC gardening thread!!

Thank you! They are recently transplanted and we've (PA) had pretty hot/sunny weather lately. I'll have to check the underside for webs/spider mites. Right now I throw Preen on as a fertilizer/weed preventer. Is this good/bad? Is there an alternative/best method to get rid of spider mites?

    BYC gardening thread!!

Hi everyone! I'm having serious issues with my cucumber plants this year. The leaves are yellowish/white and kind of become see through. The stems look dull and a bit wilted. I haven't found any evidence of aphids, cucumber beetles, or spider mites but I'm not 100% sure. I just started putting...

    Hello from Pennsylvania!

    (1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I'm brand new to chickens, but my mother has experience with them from her grandfather's farm. (2) How many chickens do you have right now? Right now we are in the process of getting 3-4 ready to lay pullets or taking over some...
