It brings a smile to my face when I go into the coop on a cool morning and find about 4 of our 7 plus year old Buff Minoricas on the roosts enjoying the sun streaming through the windows. Or as I walk by a smaller coop and get hollered at by Chubby, our big fluffy Cochin, also the same age.
We...
Trux and Lazy Gardener,
I stole that picture on the internet somewhere, but it looks just like one of our 4 Miniature Schnauzers, Pixie. Or more appropriately, her full name is Pixie Jo Lene. She smiles just like that when she is happy and about to play with you.
We have had M. Schnauzers...
Sylie,
Like I said, there have been some very sad things happen and nobody disputes that. I don't think you upset anyone. You are one of the unlucky ones and should tell your story. Stories like yours help folks who don't know any better to see that not everything always ends up rosy...
At this point we have bought chicks from two different hatcheries, bought chicks from Tractor Supply, hatched our own eggs and hatched 3 batches of shipped eggs. The only issues we have had were with the shipped eggs, 3 of 26 hatched. I recommend all but hatching shipped eggs.
Like most things in life, if a person has no problems with a transaction, they never tell anyone about it. But if something goes wrong, they tell everyone! I believe that most of the hatcheries transactions go well and a very few go horribly. Those that go well are never heard about, but...
1 year ago today we received 22 chicks from Murray McMurray Hatchery. All were alive on arrival and still are today. When I was researching before ordering chicks, all I could find were horror stories. This post is for those folks who are searching before they order so that they know not all...
I had ordered 5 Silver Laced Cochin straight run, so that is what my wife went to pick up, but somehow 4 Gold Laced Wyandotte pullets jumped into the box too. She got back to her Moms and I told her we also needed a cockerel if we are going to have any more GL Wyandottes, so back she went. And...
I said Hi from Lubbock several months ago when I joined. Last week we were down in Rockdale to visit my Mother-in-law for a week and went by Ideal Hatcheries office in Cameron to pick up chicks twice. I just wanted to let everyone here know, if you are anywhere near them, picking up is the way...
I am member of the National Jersey Giant Club. According to the membership roster there are folks in New York who have White Giants. I think you have to join to see the membership list. http://nationaljerseygiantclub.com/
I think spreading them out to help with air flow is best, and then any time you candle them move them to a different location in case you have hot/cold spots in your incubator. But when they get close to hatching, there is a school of thought that says to move them in to where they touch...
We had 2 broody Buff Minorca back at the end of February so on the 28th I stuffed 5 eggs from our mixed flock under each of them. They have been doing fairly well sitting on them, but one egg did get broken. Today they started hatching and the Buffs would have nothing to do with the chicks! I...
Mary, those are our Ancona's.
Black and yellow when they are young, then the yellow becomes white. Then as they grow it finally ends as black with white spots as shown below. The third picture is a hen and the last picture is our rooster, Richard Head...
We built a 8' x 8' brooder out of cheap plywood and 2x4's and put it in the spare bedroom with layers of plastic sheeting under it. I built it in about an hour, but even unhandy people can do it in half a day.
