    Camo Chicken

This came running towards me this afternoon- Chirpy was wearing a branch with leaves outback. The stick was stuck through her breast feathers and coming out her side . I just rounded her up into the coop to get the stick loose. She looked crazy!

    Keeping Older Hens

We've only had chickens for 3 years, but they are very much part of our family. We name them all, they respond to their names, and the grandkids keep tabs on them even though they live in another state and only visit occasionally. That being said, we honor those of our flock that have passed...

    Cold, wet weather delaying everything?

Mine have been faring well in the rain. Their little barn and run do have shelter from the rain but the latest rain has been coming from all directions, and they do like to walk in the rain. So it's inevitable that they'll have some wet feathers. After each rainfall I go out and inspect for...

    Pecking Order

Thank you so much! I just ran outback and added an old patio chair to the mix of the run. I set it on its side and the mesh seat backs added just the amount of privacy the chicks needed to feel comfortable walking around and getting to a food station. It worked great!

    Feed and water in pen/coop

Hi Mary Beth- Our little barn girls have a steel hanging poultry feeder, we were using a 5 quart poultry drinker but recently changed to a large tractor supply bucket with watering cup drinkers. We elevated the drinker on bricks and raised the bucket off the ground some too. Both waterers have...

    Lets laugh together

I don't own any ducks, but on the weekends I set up shop at the local farmers market and this duck joined me a few weeks ago on a rainy morning.

    Hen stopped laying

Is she free ranging a bit each day? My girls lay more consistently when they get out to wander outback.

Greeting from your new German member!

My grandma had chickens in her backyard too, and I think that's where my chicken love began. Her's were definitely not named, held and bathed like I do with mine but she cherished them just as much. She had a coop with chickens and doves. Your kids are perfect ages to care for their new pets!

    Rainy Day Play

It's raining again this week so I had to come up with some fun for the Little Barn Girls. The new chicks have still been getting use to the Coop with their Big Sisters. Up until today, they mostly hung out in little burrows that they made to stay safe together. They've made a lot of progress...

From 80 and sunny to 26 and snowing!

Rain watch is always so labor intensive. I keep raking the wood chips during the breaks. Very thankful for my rain boots!
