Thanks for understanding and encouraging me. We talked about it this evening and will put her down tomorrow. I so appreciate all of the wisdom and advice.
So it seems that you are saying this is likely going to kill her and at this point she is just suffering. Even though I am a nurse, I don’t want to drain ascites as a temporary solution. It sounds like you guys think this ISNT EGG BOUND and like the peritonitis that really isn’t curable...
She still seems the same. Epsom salt soaks daily, extra calcium and dusting with permethrin. Her abdomen is swollen. She is still eating and drinking. What do I do now? I don’t want her to suffer.
This is exactly how she is sitting. I can check tomorrow. I’ll read the article tonight. Thanks. She is sleeping now in the laundry basket. The other hens weren’t bothering her today.
She is eating and drinking. I gave her some cottage cheese with crushed oyster shell in it because initially I thought it was egg bound. Her abdomen is distended and she is sitting up tall like an owl and trying to contract something out at times. She ate that very quickly and wanted more...
I see nothing prolapsing. This is more what I’m worried about circled in black. There is poop on it but what is underneath looks necrotic. Which I fear is her tail.
Here is a picture where you can see her vent more clearly. The part above the vent appears to be fuzzy with feathers stuck in it which appears to be the end of her tail becoming necrotic. Nothing appears prolapsed though.
Here is my update. Two more egg hatched this morning. There are now 8 chicks. 7 are yellow or light red and one of the two that hatched today is black (must be my Black Australorp's egg) My broody has tried to kill the black chick that hatched today, but accepted the other light one that...
I candled the eggs and got rid of the two that were empty. Three looked completely dark and I left those. She is back on the eggs with the chicks under her. My 6 year old hung out there in the coop all afternoon and said the other chickens seemed to be fine around them. I was concerned...
We had 6 chicks hatch (2 about 48 hours ago and 4 sometime yesterday. Today, Momma and chicks have moved to the other side of the coop. I had a partition in the coop to keep the other chickens away and have opened the run door for them to free range at sun up everyday since the hatch. Now I...
rooster training.....will do research on that one. I went out at bedtime and stroked him for a bit. I think he forgave me. He's never been aggressive one tiny bit toward any of us. He was 'a little over a year old" when I bought him last summer. Hoping this spring thing passes quickly...
