I have three hens a little over a year old. A couple months ago, we got three chicks to add to our small flock. We were in the process of integrating the young ones with the older ones. We put the smaller coop next to the large coop so they could see each other and let the young pullets out in...
He does have a lot of experience with raising chickens, but has just graduated college with his degree. I’m not sure if he’s done that before.
She just turned a year old last month. When I say big I mean taller, larger frame than the rest of the flock. We feed the flock purina layer crumbles...
Well, we lost our first hen today. Florence was a beautiful barred Plymouth and also the largest hen of my flock. About a week ago, we had a tough heat wave. After everything we did to help alleviate the heat stress (fans, shaded backyard, ice packs to stand on, frozen melon rinds), she seemed...
I have 8 hens all a year old. They have a well ventilated coop with a run that gets quite a bit of shade. In the past, we had a fan for them that we set outside the run. Being in south Texas, it’s hot. So this summer, we are letting them free range our backyard during the day. Our backyard is...
Hello all...
First, let me give you the details on my flock. I have 1 americauna, 1 black australorp, 1 New Hampshire, 2 buff orpingtons, and 3 barred Plymouths. I have raised them all together since they were a day old. They are now 24 weeks old. 4 of them are laying. Their coop is 8x8x6 and...
That's so funny. We are experiencing the same thing with our flock! We have a mix of breeds in our flock of 8 and over the past month, my girls have caught at least 7 small snakes just like you described. The really interesting part is that no matter who catches the snake, one of my buffs (I...
My coop has a wooden floor that I covered with some leftover linoleum from our bathroom remodel. I've been using pine shavings on the floor of my coop. It's fine for me and my flock. Although, recently I've been reading a lot of articles about dirt/sandy floors for coops. What do you prefer?
Thanks for the advice. Yes, my roosts are higher than the nests and they have easy access. I'm going to give it a few days to see if they can figure it out on their own first. If now, I'll try moving them after dark.
My chickens will be 8 weeks old tomorrow. Since they moved into the coop, they seem to roost o the ground. A few mornings I'd find some roosting on the sides of the nesting boxes or on the actual roosts. The coop has 3 places for roosting, 7 nesting boxes, and an "awning" above the boxes.
This...
Okay y'all! I've got a little less than a month until my chicks arrive and I'm trying to make sure I've got everything prepared and ready...
What kind of supplement do I need to add to their water? When can I add herbs (oregano, basil, parsley, mint) to their diet? When (or should) I add...
Thank you for your responses. Any suggestions or tips for keeping them cool during the summer? My coop has good ventilation and is near a tree so it's shaded.
Hello, new to raising my own flock of laying hens. I've ordered 9 chicks for laying hens. How many should I expect to live to a "laying" age? Some family members have said out of my 9, only 2 should live to lay eggs for me.
