    Easter Egger first egg!

Congratulations! Sometimes it can take a while before EEs start laying. One of my almost 8 months old EEs has just laid her first one today. 1.8oz ! Much heavier than the first one from my Australorps.

    First Eggs from Black Australorp

For the ones that browse these 1st egg threads and are getting impatient..... Trixie is now almost 8 months old and is finally developing her comb and showing signs of getting ready for her 1st egg. Her sister Nina is laying for months and she's the same age.

    First Eggs from Black Australorp

Belated Congratulations! One of my 24 week old Australorps also just laid her first egg. Amazingly her sister looks like she's 2 months behind in development. Hormones do funny things.... The brown one is the real egg, the white one is a fake, just for comparison. Nina, on the right, is the...

chickendoors.com - small or regular sized door?

I have The Clubhouse from MyPetChicken which is for 4 full-size chickens and the small door fits perfectly. The original opening on that coop is not larger than the opening of the small door. You would have a hard time just fitting the regular size door on such a small coop.

    Arizona Chickens

I installed a swamp cooler with a permanent water supply in my run, blowing at their favorite hangout spot. It's thermostat controlled, so I can go to work and not worry about it getting too hot in the run. I also provide water pools for them to stand in to cool their legs. Since then no panting...

Tucson Easter Eggers ready for coop?

I am still providing heat at night to keep the brooder above 80F using a dimmed red heat bulb on one side of the brooder. They usually sleep on the opposite side which I interpret as feeling too hot closer to the lamp. The EEs have down on necks and heads and their bellies. The rest is...

Tucson Easter Eggers ready for coop?

I have a pair of Easter Eggers sitting in the brooder and that seems to get smaller and smaller every day. They are exactly 4 weeks old now, only partially feathered and I am wondering how much longer I can keep them entertained in the brooder. The coop and run are almost ready for move-in and I...

Hole or no hole in bottle for nipple watering

Yeah, it's their favorite toy right now. Funny enough the young arrivals discovered the nipple immediately and started pecking at it THEN the older ones followed, saying "oh what's that new thing?" :-) Now they wouldn't stop but the drip pan helps keeping the shavings dry. Sometimes they even...

That's SweetP in my avatar pic. I just introduced the 2 Australorps to her and she wasn't quite sure what to make of it yet. So she does indeed look a bit startled. She's a darling though and has adopted them within minutes, taking on a motherly role while being a youngster herself. What a girl!

Hole or no hole in bottle for nipple watering

I'll try the catch pan. Probably stoneware as they'll move it around too easily otherwise. Also I did notice a very slow drip from a leak around the thread, so I think it was partially my faulty installation causing that mess too.

Hole or no hole in bottle for nipple watering

As so many I was trying to find a better and cleaner way of providing water to my 1-2 week olds. I was using an inverted water bottle with a nipple in the cap of the water bottle (I tried the horizontal nipple first but the little ones did have enough force to overcome the spring load on the...

Hi BYC'ers, I started a new flock from day old chicks 2 weeks ago with 2 Easter Eggers and added another 2 Australorps a week ago., I am still finishing the coop/run area but hope to be done this weekend, weeks before they will want to move in. First I thought I should get ready to lay...
