WC! I bought some chicks from TSC last year and one turned out to be a white silkie Batam hen. She laid tiny little white eggs, so cute. Watch out Silkies are very broody, I had to break her broodiness a couple of times. A month ago, I finally let her sit on her own eggs, 6 out of 6 hatched...
I started my flock a year ago so I understand the anxiousness of a newbie. I had similar experience with the pasty bottom last year also. Warm water paper towel and slowly softened the poop as twist it off will do the trick. I have to recommend against the hamster water bottle. Hamsters lick...
The TSC near my house brought their chicks out yesterday. Of coure, I rushed there right after work. My DH went along and we picked up 4 little Egyptian Fayoumi. So glad they carry not just the RIR and sex links. They are small but cute.
I have free range chickens before then I lost 2 to hawks and 4 to bobcats. We saved a rooster from the bobcat but eventually the vet had to put him down. We don't free range anymore. They now live in a very large run between 2 coops. It's just too sad to lose them. I'm attaching 2 photos...
I'm having chickens for the first time this year and I started in March. I'm in Rio Verde. I didn't do anything special, I provided them with plenty of shades and water and food. They did OK for their first summer. Also, certain breeds are more heat tolerant than others.
Last update for W. he went to the vet yesterday and received the diagnosis that he will not walk again dued to spine damage. The vet checked for leg reflects and he did not respond. The vet, Dr. Lamb was very gentle and thorough when she put W down. He was put to sleep first before receiving...
Thank you everyone for your good wishes and advice.
We put a run together 20'x10' for 5 chickens now, it's a bit of an overkill but we are hoping to have more chickens soon. You are right about the bobcat returning. We lost a couple of chickens a month ago and we thought it was the hawks but...
Thank you folks. The roo struggled the first couple of times when I gave him the pill. I open his beaks and drop the pill in. First couple of times, I was too nervous and he would shook his hand and I would dropped the pill. The last few days, I'm a pro, drop the pill in in a sec. it's...
Hi AZ BYC thread followers, hope you are ready for the beautiful weekend. I want to see if anyone has the same experience and what should I do? We had a bobcat attack Wednesday of last week, I believe it was a pair of bobcats, they took one of the hens and my husband chased after one of the...
Mr W went to the Vet today. A avian specialist. Good thing is, Mr W is still with us, however, we need to give him shots and pills twice a day and feed him special diet for a week. The doctor said the roo may have spine damage and a right knee injury. If he recovers, he will not run, can...
He is more alert today. Still can't stand on his own. I rolled up a hand towel and propped his head up so this morning when I checked on him, he had his head up a little unlike the last couple days, always droop his head down. However, he drooped his head again after the day progresses. I...
Well, I only bought the live worms after the chickens won't eat the dry ones. Now I think it's too late to switch, I have been buying live ones for them :-(
Thanks. Can't see myself trapping or hunting the bobcats. We have decided to build a larger coop and construct a very large run for the chickens. So they are sorta free range, :-)
