Hello all. I have a starter flock of Huastec available to an interested party. Please reach out if you are looking to get into this most incredible landrace!
I have a subset of my Huastec Rapanui flock I would like to rehome, this is an interesting and versatile landrace fowl originating in Mexico, and is a part of the Rapanui/Olmec genetic complex. They are robust medium-sized birds and are decent layers of medium sized cream eggs. These beautiful...
Regarding a lot of the conversation going early on in this thread, I believe it is actually possible for a gene or part of gene to be translocated to a different chromosome if an error in DNA replication takes place. This is very rare and often lethal so it is not likely. However if I am...
I agree with all said above, but am not in the camp that $60 is too much for a good quality bloodline. I have paid at least that much for my Rapanui landraces and have no regrets. As far as the feeling of culling an expensive bird, I feel your pain, I have done it a few times and it always is...
She looks more Ameraucana than not, but most commonly what feed stores have are Easter Eggers that have Ameraucana crossed into them. My guess would be she includes Blue Wheaton. She might have some eumelanin enhancers or some other genetics at play making her darker than Blue Wheaton. Her...
I agree with Severne. If you like wildtype color e+/e+ (also called red duckwing) you should try to use birds that already have that pattern whether silver or red duckwing. Adding any other patterns will detract from your goals.
I'm also looking for a name for this lovely girl if anyone has any suggestions! I've been thinking of Ember or Cinder, one of those might stick, but can't think of anything I love. ❤️
I have this Raraku hen and I am curious is anyone can shine any light on her potential genotype and the name...
I will be offering the following:
Ponape Eggs.
Raraku Eggs.
Mixed Rapanui Eggs.
Contact me here or through private message to get on the list for eggs. I will start sending out eggs late February through the Summer as weather permits.
I will be offering Ponape and Raraku Hatching Eggs this year! Both of these landraces are generally wild and flighty and have a higher proportion of Junglefowl than your average domestic chicken.
+ Ponape - Both Saudeleur Ponape and Ponape Junglefowl in the line
Ponape are a Micronesian...
My main interest is Rapanui landraces and they are all pretty difficult to find. I have searched for Ponape, Raraku, Olmec, Huestec, Kiri Kiri (nearly extinct), as well as Jittoko and Ogye (last two not Rapanui). I have located breeders for all of these now but did they ever take a long time...
Also, I am by no means against buying shipped eggs. Almost all of my Rapanui chickens were hatched from shipped eggs because that was the best option. Certain breeds are rare and the only breeders you can find are far away. And sometimes you're just looking for genetics from a very specific...
I think Kiki means you should try the incubator out with non-shipped eggs at least a couple of times before trying with shipped eggs so you can minimize additional variables that might effect hatch rate.
Similarly to Kiki, I have had really good experiences with hatched eggs and really bad ones. I would say it is a big gamble. I'd suggest using a good incubator and doing plenty of research before trying. I've had over 90% hatch from shipped eggs before and only 3 out of 24 hatch before. I've...
