Thanks for all the responses...I'm feeling a little better. I just am panicking because all the "lifetime withdrawal" stats I keep reading. Part of me knows that it's still used in other parts of the world and that it *was* routinely used in the US until the label changed, but yet I also keep...
Ugh.
A few weeks ago I made a big mistake. Grabbed the Sevin dust can instead of the Poultry Dust and sprinkled a copious amount of it on a broody and the nesting box because I saw mites crawling all over. I was in a rush b/c she was brooding in with broody guineas and those ladies are...
Good advice on this post! For my issues, coop is cleaned out and bedding was burned. I sprayed as many of the cracks and crevices in the coop with Poultry Protector because I forgot to buy a sprayer when I was at TSC :he . Tomorrow will treat the coop, perimeter, and hens with Permethrin. A...
Following this post and don't mean to hijack...I just thought we may have the same questions, OP.
I too found mites- I think they are Northern Fowl Mites, last night. I have a setting broody who is due to hatch in about 5 days. I am concerned about her eggs. Is there a dry time if using a...
I didn't want to influence things by planting a breed seed, :p, but I was told "Orpington." The comb, (lack of) wattles, feathered (appearing) legs, possible beard, make me pretty sure he is not what they say.
This is the only picture I have. Local roo needs a home, and I am considering taking him. They told me a breed, but I am not sure he is what they say. What are your guesses?
We live in Ohio, so we do get a few cold, snowy months. We have a small coop/run, good for about 3 chickens that we could separate one rooster into if needed. If I would have to separate in the winter, would 1 single rooster survive the cold without the body heat of other birds? I really...
We have 10 chickens; 8 hens, 2 roosters. Our chickens range in age from 7-4 months. Our "main" rooster, a Dominique, is 7 months, our incognito, a Light Brahma, is around 5 months. We have 5 that were our originals, then adopted 3 more from someone who was overrun with chicks (1 got killed by...
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We are new to chickens and guinea fowl.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Currently, we have 11 chickens, but it may become 10 if our 16 week old rooster doesn't calm down- he attacked my 5 year old and has threatened...
Thanks for confirming my suspicion. I thought my ears were playing tricks on me when I heard a crow come from one of my 5 hens, and maybe one of the girls was just playing dominant female...but when I took a close look at the Dominique, she looked more like a he.
12 week old Dominique. Pullet or Roo? Sold as a female day old chick from Meyer Hatchery.... but I am having some doubts.
