I'll give those ideas a try as well, @Wyorp Rock . Thank you!
One question about chicken saddles, @BullChick - these protect the chicken's back, correct? Most of the bullied hen's molt is currently the breast area. Is it still worth a try?
My 3 chickens all went into molt a little over a month ago. Lately, one of them has been more obviously molting, with visible pinfeathers, and it's become clear that the other two are bullying her - kicking her out of the hen house, chasing her away from the kitchen scraps I bring to the pen...
Thank you, I'll do that! Off to the feed store for higher protein feed and oyster shell. Thank you for educating me and for your patience with my gaps in my knowledge. :)
Excellent, thanks!
And junebuggena had mentioned I'd probably drastically reduced their development with the layer feed - how long might it take for them to finish developing? Just want to make sure I know when to try something else if this doesn't work, though it sure sounds like it will!
Thank you so much for this detailed and helpful response, Welshies! I'm looking at mixed flock raiser now. Hopefully the feed store will take back the bags of Purina Layena I just bought. :) Seems a waste not to use them, but so's raising chickens who don't lay!
This is so helpful, thank you junebuggena! My chicken keeping friends and family were at a loss, and my books were no help.
So any feed with at least 18% protein, plus free choice oystershell, will do? Like Purina Flockraiser? Or do people have preferences for grower feed, game bird feed, etc?
Thanks for the advice on diet. Most of what I'd read said to transition to layer once I got my first egg but I'll look into a higher protein grower and oystershell.
I did mention in my post that they are all Easter Eggers. :)
You remember group projects from school? How four people were supposed to do a project together and inevitably one person ended up doing all the work? Group projects were the worst. And that's where I'm at with my chickens.
I have 4 hens, all easter eggers bought from a local feed store at 3...
Sorry to hear it, @hahmmy . It's so hard to tell when we're taking appropriate caution and when we're blowing things out of proportion. If she was never very lively, perhaps she was just sickly by nature. :(
@lastco , thanks so much for the advice (and for being gentle with this newbie). I'll wipe down the feeders and waterers with disinfectant, add some electrolytes and be vigilant.
Ugh, that's so frustrating, @hahmmy . I'm obviously not an expert, but seeing as your bird had similar symptoms to mine, maybe just bring her inside somewhere warm and baby her for a few days? I really have no idea what might have caused this, but unless I get some advice I guess I'll just add...
Hello all - this is my first post but I've been reading these forums for advice for months and can't thank you all enough for your help.
I have (well, had) 6 Easter Eggers, all 7-8 weeks old, on medicated starter crumbles. One of them showed some mild symptoms starting a few days ago -...
