Easter Egger - 11 weeks old

Meet Cherry - an 11 week old Easter Egger from our local feed store. Their splashes of red feathers are just gorgeous - but the enormous red comb is concerning. It’s larger and darker than all our others - but we have a variety of breeds. The only other Easter Egger, Penny, has the beginnings of...

    Spot the Rooster!

It has definitely been a proto-crow. I'm not even the one who has heard it (very deep sleeper). We have a rear neighbor with a flock that we've heard clucking for the last year or so but have never heard a crow before. It would be great if we have all pullets. Thanks for giving me hope. I'll...

    Spot the Rooster!

Forgot to link to the blog post I was looking at :p http://eight-acres.blogspot.com/2012/06/determining-gender-of-young-chickens.html

    Spot the Rooster!

Thanks! What I've googled on leghorns made me think she was a pullet too. It seems like leghorns get big red combs regardless of gender and hers was not taking off the way I'd expect a cockerel's to do. The pics on this blog post are from chicks the same age - and Foggy definitely looks closer...

    Spot the Rooster!

Foggy is easily my hardest bird to photograph - I just went out and snapped the last 3 pics.

    Spot the Rooster!

I've wondered about whether they're really Ameraucanas - they were definitely sold to me as such. The whole flock was sold as day old sexed pullets but I know we were bound to end up with a roo or two. I just have one Gold Laced Wyandotte - so those are all pictures of the same bird. The only...

    Spot the Rooster!

My pullets are 10 weeks old now - except one of them must not be a pullet after all. The past couple of days we've woken to crows. Unfortunately, we don't know who the culprit is. I've been keeping an eye on my larger birds, a Gold Laced Wyandotte named Cordelia, and a Barred Plymouth Rock named...

I can sex your pullets and cockerels!

"Cordelia", my Gold Laced Wyandotte, and easily my prettiest bird, looks to be a cockerel to my untrained eye. Our birds are 8 weeks old today, but all different breeds so I have no direct comparison and I'm brand new at this. The color on the comb, wattle development and pointier feathers all...

Not Sure If You've Got A Pullet Or Cockerel? Click Here! Thread 2

Just saw Junebuggena's reply to ThreeHens2 and I imagine that I probably need to wait a few more weeks to be sure too. Still, if anyone has any thoughts, I'd be interested.

Not Sure If You've Got A Pullet Or Cockerel? Click Here! Thread 2

I need some help sexing my Golden Laced Wyandotte, Cordelia. She and my Barred Rock Jackie are bigger than our other birds, all about 6 weeks old. Cordelia is more aggressive than our other birds, and she's the only one with so much red in her developing comb and wattle. Since she's our only...

    Inherited coop needs help

Oh wow! I know the 4 sq ft per bird was a suggested minimum but I didn't realize that I'd need twice the space for it to actually be good enough. If we have all 8 birds the new plan gives us 4.5 sq ft per bird. To be clear though, it will no longer be only 31" wide; that was the measurement of...

    Inherited coop needs help

The bird dust issue is good to know - thank you! Perhaps we will convert the whole shed. It would be easier to do if we had the garage cleared out and could set up storage and a workbench in there, it's currently filled with many boxes from our move that still haven't been unpacked, and we can't...

    Inherited coop needs help

I'm back - I've done a lot of demo, found and destroyed an unbelievable amount of mouse/rat evidence, and I'm full of new ideas. Here's a pic of my coop/shed from the outside so you get a better idea of what I'm working with. Note that there's a nice vent on the cupola but only on this one side...

    Inherited coop needs help

It's one side of a larger shed. I'm not sure I could convince the spouse to give up the rest of the shed since it's our only one and we always seem to have some project going on the workbench in the other half.

    Inherited coop needs help

I think that having the lower door open may be confusing what you're seeing. I'd take another picture of it but I've already been in there dismantling it Both sections have a chicken wire door that flips down to open and in this picture the lower door is open and hanging down. I also have the...

    Inherited coop needs help

Hello! I'm a new chickie momma who was super excited to buy a house with an existing coop. I've been lurking in the forums for a bit and that, combined with finding out from the neighbors how poorly the previous owners chicken keeping efforts went, made me realize I need to make improvements...
