Well, many changes for us, been ages since I checked in from Kansas City! We bought 31 acres about 100 miles North, and about 18 months ago were up to about 4 roosters and 45 hens. So, no chicken tractor for 3 years now…
But, they slowed down a lot on laying since we bought them at 1 year old...
Glad I could help. About a 75 minute drive for us, and something else might keep us busy that weekend, but have fun! Never been but hope to go one day :)
Thanks for the welcomes! Glad I finally got the train moving, even if only a couple psi in the boiler so far. So many things I'd like to learn to do along with my kiddos. I mean I like to have fun, but in the long haul in my mind it's really about what sort of legacy I can leave for them...
I've been on here lurking mostly for about a year off and on, but after building a chicken tractor over the last 2 weeks with help from my future farming twins, we finally brought home 6 birds today!
So excited, but also nervous a bit! ;-) Ran across a guy with 20 whose girls were done with...
What craziness on the price, now it's down to about $61 per 50' roll! Still staying busy, so chickens are sidelined for the moment... maybe it'd be better to wait until the hottest part of the summer is over. I have a friend who has 2 roos and 25 chickens, may start with a half dozen pullets...
Haven't got my shed converted yet, but planning on it this month. Just got the stuff from the Depot tonight to put gutters on and catch all the rainwater off my 10x12 shed which will be becoming a coop (2/3 of it at least). First job was secure water for the birds before I get them, so will roll...
Rising too quick for me... and other projects have come to the forefront (like I gotta get my grow room cranking out microgreens first, to start some cash flow from my first commercial customer/restaurant! :)
While excited about chickens, going to try and take my time and plan out a coop, run...
As a newbie here, I just found this thread and I want to do something similar... 10x12 shed and I want to basically split it down the middle with a wall and a door, plan to cut some vents in the triangles under the roof on each end. (Only have the one shed in our 1/6 acre backyard and still need...
Well, I was just rather surprised that she was the one who expressed any concern (maybe has never been around chickens in her life... dunno, she just retired, but might have always lived in a city...), and the other neighbor lady who is 75 or so and the neighborhood Nosy Nancy who observes...
Got a hold of my other neighbors tonight and she semi-joked about needing to close the window in the summer if we get chickens (even though the nearest corner of their house will be at LEAST 100', maybe 120-130' from where the coop would be...
OK, so, some thoughts on all this... talked to my boss at work and he said I can have all the pallets I want (our warehouse probably gets 2-3 trucks a week, so constantly getting some in and I can cherry pick which ones I want!) Also, another tech said he'd come over and give me a hand with the...
Just an idea FOR the future... you could put some trellises with maybe grape vines on one or two sides... shade in the summer, leaves fall off so you get more heat in the winter. I know it doesn't help in the immediate near term, but currently that's what I plan to do when I get mine built.
Thanks, I was under the impression that doing the deep bed in the coop would make it nearly odorless, and manure would dry out generally if they are just running around the yard or in runs...
Just talked to the neighbor that had me concerned and she seems to be fine with it. The coop is what needs to be over 100' from her house and that's no problem. My other neighbor isn't home, but he's really a good guy so I can't imagine he'd care either. Besides, a few eggs at times would...
