    What breeds are these?

They didn't tell her. She doesn't really care so much which breed they are, but I am curious because I really like them. The red one has a perfect temperament - very calm and quiet, not aggressive, but also not too shy.

    What breeds are these?

They belong to my mother in law, she got them at farmer's markets.

    What breeds are these?

If it helps distinguish between a New Hampshire Red and Production Red, the red one is significantly lighter in color than my RIRs (it was pretty cloudy out, so she looks darker in the pic than she really is). The gray one is really, really small - the picture doesn't make her size obvious...

How can I make my chickens scared of us?

magic - it took a looooong time to get her to stop chasing. The hose is mainly what did it, but she's only 4 pounds so eventually the hens got bigger than her. That helped too jennh - tried it! They will back up a little bit if you poke them with the broom, but then they just try to get...

    What breeds are these?

Can anyone tell me what breeds these are? These are both hens. To get some idea of the size, the red one is significantly smaller than my RIRs, and the gray one is barely bigger than a pigeon. Thanks!

How can I make my chickens scared of us?

Thanks everyone for the helpful suggestions. We'll show them who's boss! mychookschick - it's actually funny because I had a post on here when we first started letting the chickens free range about my little dog (a minpin) chasing them. It took us forever to break her of that (a hose did...

How can I make my chickens scared of us?

Thanks for the suggestions, purr. We did give up on chasing them because it didn't seem to be working, but maybe we should have continued until we got them running. Will also try carrying them around - do they have to be on the roost first? Or can we just grab them any time? They're easy to...

How can I make my chickens scared of us?

I agree, it is pretty funny, especially to see them stealing food from a large dog (I am glad she is so docile, most dogs would not have put up with that). But, I don't find it so funny when they peck my legs!

How can I make my chickens scared of us?

Great idea, ddawn! I will definitely try squirt guns! How are the BOs in terms of noise?

How can I make my chickens scared of us?

ChickieBooBoo - I wouldn't mind that at all if they didn't peck at us constantly! They peck HARD and break the skin. Everyone in the house is afraid of them because of it. Plus our dogs can't sit in the yard without being harassed by them.

How can I make my chickens scared of us?

I'm hoping to keep them because we are moving in about 5 months and then we will get rid of them. Their egg production is great and they are doing a good job on the ticks, and they don't try to leave our yard, so I'd rather not start from scratch. The dogs do leave them alone, the problem is...

How can I make my chickens scared of us?

The whole reason we got them is to take care of ticks in the back yard, which they are doing wonderfully (it was a big problem before we got them). So, we want them to be able to free range in the whole yard.

How can I make my chickens scared of us?

This may seem like a strange question, but we are having a big problem. Our two RIR hens who are 1 year old have gotten progressively more brave and are no longer afraid of anything, human or animal. They follow us around pecking at us whenever we go in the yard, thinking we have food (or we...

Raptor migration season - watch out!

Thanks for this post. I am still fairly new to chicken ownership, and my full grown girls were harassed/attacked by a hawk or falcon today. I heard them making their alarm sounds and ran out just in time to see it fly off - I just got a glimpse of it, but it was grey and white, and maybe the...

my chickens keep eating their eggs

smk, we made a few discoveries last night! First, we found an opossum in our yard for the first time ever. Then, we found this morning that the chickens moved their nest. So, we think the opossum ate their eggs. This is concerning because now we have to worry about predators, but the good news...

my chickens keep eating their eggs

I haven't had snake problems, but yes, I believe they do. I was just talking to someone the other day on chat who was having problems with snakes eating their eggs. They said that they have to collect the eggs right away or the snakes get in there and get them. Hope we can both figure out our...

my chickens keep eating their eggs

Do you have any evidence that they are eating the eggs - like stickyness on the remaining eggs or anything? I wonder if there is something else going on and yours are just laying less eggs?

my chickens keep eating their eggs

smk - we discovered that our chickens ate yesterday's eggs. It's the first time it's happened for us (they are about 8 months old). They ate the (2) eggs but left most of the shells. I am thinking of trying ceramic eggs. Someone suggested that it may be a rat and not the chickens, but I'm not...

Mule Chick - I know this thread is a little old, but I am wondering if you can tell me where you got the ceramic eggs? Our chickens ate their eggs for the first time yesterday
