The DUMBEST thing I've ever heard somebody say about Chickens...READ!

So...not sure about stupid, but definitely greedy. I sold some fertile eggs to a gal. I've actually had dealings with her before, and wasn't particularly fond of how she cares for her chickens, and I won't sell her chicks any more since she tends to 'lose' them, but I decided, what's the harm...

The DUMBEST thing I've ever heard somebody say about Chickens...READ!

I'm not really offended. Just making a statement is all. It does astound me though just how stupid people can be. Common sense sadly is not so common anymore. On the upside, at least we, the more intelligent people, can poke fun at those who say/ask dumb things and have a laugh at their...

The DUMBEST thing I've ever heard somebody say about Chickens...READ!

I dislike 'dumb blonde' jokes immensely as I myself am a natural blonde and have found myself the punchline of these 'jokes' more times than I care to count. So much so that I colored my hair and haven't gone back to my natural color now in several years. That said, this woman was certainly no...

The DUMBEST thing I've ever heard somebody say about Chickens...READ!

I've heard the 'where does food come from' conversation more times than I care to count. Some people are just...ugh. I've have several people actually argue with me that one needs a rooster in order for a hen to lay eggs. I also had one woman refuse to eat any colored egg except for brown...

Tiny egg with a double yolk!

It came from my Silkie coop, so it's definitely a bantam egg, and I do have a few young ones in there from this past spring so it's likely a first egg for one of the young ones or an oddity from one of my older birds. Wouldn't be the first time I had an older bird lay a very small egg. Ah...

Tiny egg with a double yolk!

Wanted to share this. When collecting eggs today, my mother and I found a teeny tiny little egg. A 'fart' egg. However, upon cracking it open, we were surprised to find that not only did it have a yolk, but it was a double yolk to boot! I just had to take a picture.

Sudden Sick Hen - Any ideas what it may be?

I do. Why? So far in regards to sick birds, it's just been this one from the new bunch I got 3 weeks ago and the onset of any signs of sickness was overnight. The rest so far look fine, but I plan to keep an extra close eye on them now. I keep all new birds quarantined for one month before...

Have been. That's why these are in quarantine.

Sudden Sick Hen - Any ideas what it may be?

I actually had someone come do the necropsy for me. Apparently nothing I could have done. The bird was filled with yellow fluid, which smelled absolutely horrible. Liver was yellow, other organs were grey-ish in color, and the heart was 3 times larger than it should have been for a bird that...

Sudden Sick Hen - Any ideas what it may be?

Okay, what the heck. So, I carefully took her out of the cage to take a picture, and she SEEMED to be doing better. Looked around a bit. Next thing I know her whole body seizes and I lay her down on the ground and try to help her but then she died. I don't understand what's happened.

Sudden Sick Hen - Any ideas what it may be?

Yes to the pale comb. No to sneezing and her eyes appear to be normal. She's part of a relatively new flock of birds I got abut 3 weeks ago, and they are still in quarantine. Six birds, and I got six eggs yesterday, so I assume one was hers. I'll go take a picture of her.

Sudden Sick Hen - Any ideas what it may be?

So, I have 1 1/2 year old bantam hen (mix breed). She was doing just fine yesterday as far as I could tell, moving around and eagerly eating with the others, but today she was huddled by the water container and not moving. Her crop is a bit inflated (not overly so, but it is noticeable) and...

    Special chick needs a name!

Most of my birds are bantams, but even bantams grow from being tiny little chicks. For a whole month, this little peeper stayed the same as the day it hatched. Finally, it's starting to grow!

    Special chick needs a name!

A gal I spoke with who breeds chickens mentioned that it's possibly dwarfism. Either way, not much I can do about it, but this little chick is pretty adamant on surviving. I hope to have it for awhile. I've grown quite attached. Thank you for the name suggestion! ^_^

    Special chick needs a name!

So, I have a little Cochin bantam chick that is in need of a name and I find myself grasping at straws for a suitable name. No idea of the gender, but any and all name suggestions will be considered. Now, this little peep is rather special. It hatched out from under a broody hen with several...

Half-Naked Bird is Sunburning. What can I do to help?

I personally don't feel that picking a large bird (or any bird really) up by the wings is a good idea, but that's just my opinion. We did have to move her from the vehicle to her new enclosure, and we opted to put a blanket over her and carry her, fully supporting her weight, and there was far...

Half-Naked Bird is Sunburning. What can I do to help?

No worries. We name some of our birds too. Most all our farm critters are also rescues. No one gets eaten here. Problem animals, generally the more aggressive roosters, simply get re-homed. As for picking up birds, yeah, that's what my mom and I were thinking. Try to support the bulk of the...

Half-Naked Bird is Sunburning. What can I do to help?

Also, what is the proper/best way to pick up and carry a full grown turkey hen? The person we got her from picked her up in such a way that greatly alarmed us, but we were told that that was the 'only' way to pick up the turkey. :|
