It took ours a few weeks before they would leave the perimeter of the house, and now they free range almost a 1/4 mile away during the day. They've also discovered the road out front! We have 18, so they are pretty brave as a group... but I could see a small group just going to the same place...
He definitely tangoed with some critter, ouch! I would keep those new keets locked up for several weeks/months and keep them happy, otherwise they may just wander off with ol' Pete. If you can get all of them in there together for a few weeks, I think that'd be ideal. Good luck!
I'm not entirely sure what time it opened this morning, but I would guess around 6am. Last night it closed around 9:15pm, and there haven't been any issues with birds getting caught outside (yet). They've learned (begrudgingly) to use the new door, and everything seems to be working just fine :)
Hi all, thought you might be interested in the automatic door I just installed on the guinea's coop. After some research, I decided this would be the best option for my setup and so far, so good.
The door and materials are REALLY well made. Last night the door shut right around 9pm, and I'm...
Has anyone had success with using nipple feeders with guineas? I'm still using the cup-style waterers I posted above, but they constantly perch on top of the bucket and crap all inside the cups :(
I didn't know either, just learned that myself: http://www.npr.org/sections/goatsandsoda/2017/03/06/518219485/forbidding-forecast-for-lyme-disease-in-the-northeast
We started with one of these for the keets:
and then I made a 5gal bucket when they were about 3 weeks old using these (due largely to the same issue, they were kicking pine chips into it and pooping in it):
and they seemed to figure it out soon enough... I figure if they get thirsty enough...
Glad you got some revenge! Oddly enough, I took a shot at a possum about a week ago whom I saw wandering towards the coop right at twilight. Not sure if I got it, but I haven't seen it since.
Ironically, I also learned that possums (or opossums?) eat loads of ticks... so I'm on the fence about...
Cool! How do you get only a few out at a time? mine all run together, so I'm sort of thinking they might all run out at the same time... I also have 21 of them, so there's that.
How's it going today? Have they all come back? Ours are currently 4 weeks, but I can tell they are itching to get out from their coop and start foraging... but I don't want them to all disappear!
Wow, that's impressive. Since ours were keets, they've wanted nothing to do with us. They'd wiggle free from our hand and run off. We have 21, so I somewhat think they just prefer to be with their kind, and to be wary of us. They are just over 4 weeks old now, not sure if they'll change their...
Well, they actually came a day earlier than planned, so ideally we would have been prepared but that's life. The folks at TSC said these bins can raise 30 baby chickens, and we kept them in there for about 2 or 3 weeks. They're out in their coop now, and will probably be free ranging in two or...
Wow, that's really awful to hear, very sorry you lost your baby guineas :(
That's unbelievable that the racoons could get them that easily through chicken wire... you can only hope the other few died trying to save their friend(s).
If you were near me I would happily house your guinea, but I...
I found that part ironic as well! We got ours for ticks, horse flies, mosquitoes etc... but I'm thinking they might not start really munching on those critters until they are older and free ranging.
Mine do the same in their coop, sort of fluttering about and smashing into the fencing--but not...
