Infectious bronchitis or MG or even something else? Help!

Sunday September 9th I woke up and found my year old Easter Egger “Bunny” sitting in the run which was unusual as she runs towards me any time I go near her. She just sat there and I noticed her eye was closed and the right side of her face was extremely swollen to the point her nostril was...

Building our first coop! Is this enough?

I still plan to let them free range during the winter as well, if they want to. I know some chickens that love the snow and others that won't leave the coop. We will see. The coop/run isn't quite finished. This weekend should be our last build day and getting everything together. I also plan to...

Building our first coop! Is this enough?

I'm being pretty cautious about the safety. I'm putting latches and locks on every door or opening. Nothing is getting in that coop. The run i worry about but, only because it's 19 gauge wire. We bought 100 feet of it and i could only find it in 19 gauge and 23 gauge. I would have preferred...

Building our first coop! Is this enough?

I have heard mixed reviews on the number of chickens that can be in an 8x8 and 15-20 seems to be the most popular vote. I intended on only having 10, unfortunately one died but i do not plan to add...yet! I think 9 chickens in an 8x8 is good. I was more concerned about the run. Like i said, they...

Building our first coop! Is this enough?

Our chicks are going to be 4 weeks old here in a few days and it's been quite the scramble getting this coop together. We have an 8x8 coop with an attached 8x8 run. We live on quite a few acres and plan on having them free range most of the the day. But, I wanted somewhere for them to be incase...

Protruding vent and pasty butt on week old chick

I do have some extra virgin cold pressed coconut oil. Is there anything that could go wrong when using that? I feel like I've stressed her out so much with all the butt cleaning and checking her. I just don't want to jump from one extreme to the next.

Protruding vent and pasty butt on week old chick

I leave a cover on mine. I have the lid of the tote cut out with riveted hardware cloth attached. I just didn't want to risk the chance of them being bothered by our dog or cat. They are currently housed in our living room which has been gutted for renovations. I could potentially switch once...

Protruding vent and pasty butt on week old chick

This is my setup. I feed them purina premium start and grow medicated. I have a 250w bulb that took me quite a while to adjust so that it wasn't 10000 degrees in there. I have found 91 in the spot it's at. The other side of the brooder is not anywhere close to that temp.

Protruding vent and pasty butt on week old chick

As an update, I trimmed some of her rump fuzz and applied some Vaseline to the area. This is what I'm dealing with, looks very swollen, is that just from her having pasty butt? Is there something I should do diet wise? The heat around 90-91, I considered lowering it but, a few still seem to want...

Protruding vent and pasty butt on week old chick

I try to dry her as much as possible she only takes like 2-3 minutes to be fully dry and fluffy again. I'll try clipping the fur. I don't try and pull at all, I just leave her under the warm water and it breaks away and if it doesn't I just rub. I learned my lesson pulling the last time. I'm...

Protruding vent and pasty butt on week old chick

Hello BYC, I posted a few days ago about a couple of chicks of mine at 5 days old having an issue of pasty butt and me possibly pulling the umbilical cord out of one of them. Since then, all has been well, the chick with the umbilical cord issue seems fine and thriving. But, I keep getting...

Help! Tried treating pasty butt and I think i pulled out her umbilical cord! (PICTURES)

I forgot to mention that I did soak their behinds and there was a lot of poop that was softening. I'm almost wondering if it was their umbilical cord to begin with that just ended up having poop stuck to it that hardened. I tried not to pull. I just rubbed my fingers over it until most of it...

Help! Tried treating pasty butt and I think i pulled out her umbilical cord! (PICTURES)

I am new to raising chickens and I just got a batch on Wednesday making them 5 days old today. Two of my Brahmas had what I thought was pasty butt and I got one all cleaned up fine but the other I noticed now has a sore protruding spot on her underside! I'm assuming it's her belly button and I...
