There really isn't anywhere in my yard for a nest to hide. Especially not 2 weeks worth of eggs. And we don't really get predators around here because we're in the city.
I checked her bottom, and it is moist, however, she really hates being handled, so it's hard to check how many fingers wide...
Well, these aren't new chickens. They're 2 years old. And they aren't laying outside the nesting box. Just the Orpington isn't laying at all without a known reason.
Thanks, but she's not laying outside the nesting box. She's just not laying at all.
One Americauna lays green and one lays blue. They do free range in my yard, and I've searched all over for eggs but have found nothing. My chickens don't generally lay outside their nesting boxes though unless the one they want to use isn't available.
It is normal for my Orpington to not lay...
Excellent! So, she's done then! But she's still getting picked on, and she tries to sleep by herself on a small roost next to the coop. Do I let her sleep by herself? I've been moving her to the bigger roost with the other chickens. I don't know how to handle the bully situation.
I started this thread about my broody chicken, and thought I should also post here as I have concerns about another chicken.
1) The bird in question is my Buff Orpington, two years old, and I have noticed she is smaller than usual. I have checked for any abnormalities around her abdomen, and...
She seems smaller than usual, but she is eating and running around during the day. I checked her abdomen, and nothing seems to be protruding, but I am not certain I know what I'm looking for when checking for a bound egg?? That's a good idea to post her symptoms in Emergencies.... Thank you!
Since I've locked her out of her nesting box a week ago, she's been walking around and eating. Her weight seems normal and healthy. I think she might be less broody now, but still isolated and bullied. Not sure if she's not laying eggs because she is still a little broody? or if it's because the...
I'm not sure I am equipped to handle a freshly hatched baby chick. I work 40+hrs a week, so if extra attention is required, I won't be able to provide it.
So, I have 4 chickens about 2 years old: 2 Americaunas, an Australorp, and a Buff Orpington. The Australorp has been broody for close to 3 weeks now, and I have been unable to break her of the habit. I've locked her out of the nesting boxes, and I set up a new nesting box for the other chickens...
Hello everyone!
I am fairly new to Backyardchickens.com. I've only had my own chickens for almost a year and a half, and they are just getting ready for their second Winter. So, as the weather became nicer earlier this year, they've taken interest to sleeping in the run. We put a roost in there...
We have a loft as well, but not one we can block off. If it comes down to it, we can remove the roost, and see if they take interest in the coop again.
I live in Michigan, so the winters get pretty dang cold. I guess my main concern is if they are going to move someplace warmer before they freeze to death. It's not like they don't know about the coop. they go in there to lay their eggs every day. And there is plenty of room for them in there...
Hello,
Our chickens are coming up on their 2nd Winter, and with the warm weather they have experienced the last few months, they have been sleeping in their covered run. I have a roost in their run and in their coop. The run is covered and secure, but only one wall is tarped to break the wind...
I did squeeze her foot, but nothing came out, and her foot looked like it had already started healing. There was nowhere for pus to come out of. She's still very happy, never any symptoms of discomfort. I appreciate your advice on the matter!
So, I removed the scab on Saturday. No pus or plug came out. I am hesitant to make any surgical cuts if my hen is doing fine.
I've been changing her bandage every day and applying antibiotic ointment. This is what the wound looks like after 3 days:
Should I leave it alone and just keep an...
