Sand To the Rescue
For those still interested: If your ducky persistently eats flax bedding, like mine, chances are he or she will eat anything you throw at them bedding wise.
After flax I also tried weewee pads, small wood chips, big wood chips & straw. She prefers ALL of them over her food...
@chickens really - as I've mentioned a couple of times: there are no other ducklings, there is only her. So Poppy is the only duckling I have left. The other ducklings were adopted with their mother Amelia and went to another home, where they are doing very good. Poppy at that time, was still a...
@gilbert2 - I am not trying to make her into an indoor duck. She is only indoors due to circumstances, which I explained earlier. And the only reason she is getting this poop-bag (quite eloquent) is so she can be out of her smaller pen and away from the flax so she can eat the decent food and...
@cyriuskee - that weewee pad might actually work, I'm gonna go to the store here to see if they have them! - She was pretty annoyed with me for putting her in to the harness, but after an hour or so she went to sleep in it, since she was relaxed I took it off. I made the headhole a bit smaller...
@chickens really - Thank you for the advice. No she cannot forage at the moment unless she is with me taking a walk outside and/or getting to know her future friends (Ping, Peppy and Pong) under supervision/protection. Simply because at the moment she is an indoor ducky and Peppy is too rough...
@cyriuskee - A little update: So far the flax bedding for Poppy is not working as we are hoping. It is fantastic for the smell, it is ok to clean (her poops clump up, which is nice) but she keeps on eating the stuff... And not just a little either. First few days she ate a lot of her good food...
@drumstick diva - Thanks. However if all goes well, Poppy will become an outdoor duckie the moment she is big and strong enough, just like the other three.
The curious crew of three quackers do sometimes think they are all indoor duckies though and wander inside the house when I leave the door...
Thanks for the responses!
@cyriuskee - if it's not harmful, I guess I'll just let her be with the flax for now.
We've been using this stuff for three years for our adult ducks with no issues. But they don't really eat it and I honestly had no clue what it would do to the digestive tract of a...
So, Poppy (indian runner duck), almost 4 weeks old, is still indoors (for more info on why, it is all in my lengthy introduction of our duckies ;) ).
We recently changed from towels to flax bedding in her cage, because at this age her poops were hard to manage with just towels (changed them two...
Ok, so I've had runner ducks for three years now and this forum has been my "goto" for all my duck related inquiries. Since I had a question this time that I didn't find a satisfying answer to, I decided to finally join. :)
Our Runner Duck-Tale up to the present: (for those with the patience to...
