How can I tell when the hens are about ready to start laying?

Ok, the large red wattles and combs makes scene, but I've just identified the hens from the roosters.

How can I tell when the hens are about ready to start laying?

Our Black Copper Maren Hen is giving us an egg every day. She laid her first egg on July 3 (at about 4 months). The first few were spread out and irregular, but the last 2 weeks she has been like clockwork, every morning just before noon. She did miss one day and the next day's egg was twice the...

I'm a country girl through & through, but not a farm girl. Give me a black bear, no problem. Garter snake, bring it on (there're just after the mice & I don't want them in near the house), but cows, nope. Roos, I'm working on it.

We have 2 that look almost identical. "Copper" is the top of the pecking order, but not aggressive to me. "Nutmeg" seems to be second in command.

I have named my hen "Gidget". She is quiet, spunky, small and very friendly. She hasn't started laying yet, but I know she is getting close. The rooster is of course, "Moondoggy". He has very pretty coloring, but not sure if we will be keeping him or butchering him. He is rather loud at times.

The one that is showing the most aggression right now is a mixed breed, so one we were going to butcher anyway. I thought of keeping one rooster (a Black Copper Maran) but we have 2 and I suspect that one is guilty of bloodying a less mature rooster, but I guess we butcher all but one rooster...

Yes, this is our first flock. We didn't know how the dogs would do. (We also have a Cocker Spaniel.) Daisy loves to hunt and I've seen her kill a chipmunk, so I wasn't sure how she would do. But she is SMART and she knows that they are important to me. I was very watchful and purposeful...

Hi, We believe that our dog is a Corgi mix. My son actually found her coming home from work, late one night, last summer. We looked for an owner, but I'm afraid someone drove her out to the country and dropped her off. "Daisy" is a great dog. She is fantastic with the chickens! When they...

    New to Raising Chickens!

We moved from town to the family farm a year ago. One of the things we wanted to do is raise a few chickens. Besides the tremendous benefit of a few fresh eggs, we have a terrible problem with ticks in our area. In fact, I spent most of the last summer (with Lyme's disease). In fact, a few...
