So far I stick to BBS because I understand those genetics. (The little info graphic photos across the internet help out!) I also absolutely love Splash so generally stick with breeding groups that will get me Splashes or Blues. I do have the odd Black Cochin however they tend to take over...
Id lock them in for a week to make sure. Many are the random stashes of dozens of eggs that I find throughout the year.
Under the floor of the barn, under an old car, everywhere in holes in the square bale stack, catbeds, mangers... they’re inventive in where they’ll squeeze into to lay an egg lol
Cayenne pepper is an immune booster and can help boost eggs. Lots of herbs can. Mint will as well I believe. Nettles maybe. Alfalfa is good.
Have you done the finger vent test thing to see if any of them are still laying?
Predators prefer whatever your favourite hen or breed might be. It’s like they can mind read.
I had a blue maran and black copper maran hen I finally managed to find and buy. The blue got heat stress and died, the black copper never laid an egg the entire year I had her and then she got eaten...
I just got a dozen wheaten/blue wheaten maran eggs to stick under my plethora of broodies. I’m excited for them! Although my luck it’ll be 10 cockerels and 2 pullets :lau
CHB does a couple of shows in the summer and fall. Last year they didn’t one at Westerner days and then had their main fall show in Lacombe. Just depends how far you’re willing to drive.
Mine don't catch on that well. They don't usually have time. Ninja chicken comes vaulting out of the nest box so fast they might not even know what's after them.
One particularly memorable time I was playing with fluffy cochin babies and my fattest cat just came up to rub on my leg. Mama hen...
The poor cats never expect it do they?
"I've shared this chickens food and water daily for ages. I've kept their nests nice and warm as they're perfect cat snoozing shape. Why would she attack me out of the blue?!?!?!!"
My silkies have always made ok moms. Although they aren't known as being a bright chicken breed so I try to keep them contained. A more free range silkie mom is not quite as good
I prefer my Cochins as broodies. They're extra good moms and can fit more eggs under them ;)
My first broody of the year is starting to sit. I’m planning on collecting my Silkie eggs for her to sit on. I’m trying to get Showgirls and really don’t need tonnes more Silkies LOL You’re welcome to some of the chicks if you like. I’ll see how many I can collect quickly and hatch and we can go...
Mine will get their feathers stuck together if they're really adventurous. Usually just when the feathers are wet. But they must have good grooming practices because I've never seen them turn into big mud balls. Some of my non feather footed ladies have issues with mud balls building up on their...
Went for a drive in the wonderful long weekend weather today. It turned into an adventure as I ended up stuck in the driveway of the people's farm LOL But eventually we got me dug out and I carried on my way home, to bring this guy to his new gf's!
Yes it’s not easy on the phone. Mainly it’s just too darn tiny! Hard to read and hard to click on what you actually want too. Easy to have fat fingers LOL Much more computer friendly.
The Facebook group is more active but is just like any other Alberta chicken sales group for the most part...
I know Kathy is on the Alberta Chickens Etc. forum although not as active as she used to be. I purchased some of my original Cochins from her.
That forum is quieter than it used to be but you can usually still find the contact information for many breeders. It's not comparable to the Facebook...
I think the University of Alberta has had a lot to do with Chanteclers in the province. Pretty sure it was them that really pushed ahead on developing the Partridge Chants. Entirely possible the fella in charge focused on whites as well.
This year I’ve decided the best way for me to figure out genetics is breed and see what happens. Give me a mental image to apply all the techno jargon words too!
