Hi all,
We have two adult hens (1.5 years old) and are in the process of integrating four 13-week old chicks. We started off with the babies in a grower coop with the hens free-ranging around them. Now they've all been free-ranging together for about three weeks in a large fenced outdoor area...
Love the pinterest photo. Any idea what the ground cover is? We have a similar setup, with aviary netting over a fence lined with hardware cloth. We had the same thought you did as far as the height of the hardware cloth. Our conclusion was that as long as the coop was secure from racoons and...
Thanks so much for your replies! I also suspect it is behavioral, as only two of the four are missing feathers. The smallest hen, our Speckled Sussex, is the baldest, and I definitely see her getting chased by the two largest, which are a Plymouth Barred Rock and an Easter Egger. Our other large...
Hello chicken lovers,
I've been feeding my flock of four hens Green Mountain layer pellets as the majority of their diet, supplemented with the occasional handful of corn or some mealworms. They also spend a good portion of their day roaming about 1500 square feet of garden/compost. My question...
Hi, thanks so much! Shoot, I thought it was a good size for 4 girls, that's good to know.
I know there are lots of different recommendations for coop sizes, but what would be ideal for four medium to large hens?
For food, we have them on Green Mountain organic layer pellets, supplemented by...
Hello chicken lovers,
I am a relatively new chicken mama. I have four 9 month old girls, 4 different breeds, raised together from chickhood. They live in a 4x6 coop with an attached 4x8x6ft high run. There are three nest boxes but they all prefer the same one. They also get to range in our...
Thanks everyone! I'll make sure that there is sufficient ventilation, thanks for the tip about dripping windows. The pullets (!) told me that they are, in fact, big girls and to stop treating them like babies. Pretty soon they'll be slamming doors and scowling at me :)

We don't have a heat source out there, haven't had one since before they moved outside, but hoping Sublight is correct, and good point about the wild birds, Sublight.
Thanks everyone!
Hi there,
I know the answer is "they will be fine" but I'd like some reassurance please. I'm a first time chick raiser, and our 10 week old chicks have been outside for a few weeks. There are four of them and they are happy in their coop, but here in Massachusetts it has been unseasonably warm...
Good to know, Fairview. But I won't be telling him :)
In the meantime, I got them some crumble and they are happily chowing down. Clever little birds. They've also requested a big screen TV out there...
Thanks everyone! Looks like I should go buy some crumble for the little birds. 21Hens, I have them on grower pellets right now, I was going to hold off on layer feed until they are bigger or maybe I'll just give them oyster shell on the side. When you make your wet mash, is it just pellets with...
Hi all,
This is my first experience raising chicks. We have four chicks, various breeds, who had been on chick starter (which was pretty much a powder) until about 2 weeks ago, when I began transitioning them to grower pellets. They are resisting eating the dry pellets. I have been sprinkling a...
Hi chicken lovers,
We're newbie chicken owners and are considering a chicken tractor or mobile coop (is there a difference?). We'd love to build one but don't really have the bandwidth. I've looked around online but haven't had much luck. Can anyone recommend a source? Or if we really need to...
