    "Holding" it

I'm pretty new at this. But one of my pullets was kept in the coop for a couple of days and I think she held hers. No eggs from her and then when she finally got out, she ran to her nest in the yard and she laid a double yolker. I thought that was rather impressive and so I just let her lay...

    People biting rooster...need advice

Cock-a-doodle-stew! It isn't as hard as you would think it is. We had a similar problem and this turned out to be the best solution.

Am I a bad chicken momma? I'm not giving them oyster...

I think you have the hang of it. I'm new at this, but have done some research, and most chickens get plenty of calcium from yummy bugs that they eat as well as many leafy greens. We are supplementing because two of our pullets are laying shell-less eggs. I tell my kids the same thing, just...

    Should I be concerned?

First I want to thank you all for all of your postings. I'm new to the chicken world and I have been learning quite a bit. Now, I have a few questions. #1 How do you know if a hen is egg bound? How could I help her? #2 I have 5 20 week pullets and 3 17 week pullets. Our RSL (Jasmine)...

    I have several questions...

We had similar issues with our Roo, he only got worse. After he tried to mount the girls, he would try to come after the humans. As we were trying to find a new home for him, he met his (timely) fate with a visiting dog. We made "Cock-a-doodle-Stew"! Tastes just like chicken. And, I learned...

    Post your FIRST EGG pics!

My son told me that our RSL, Jasmine, had built a nest and had been sitting in it for a couple of days. He said he would go and sit with her to keep her company. I go inside and hear a commotion, I was sure he was torturing the poor chicken! Instead he is running at me with a beautiful egg...

Who else is waiting the impossible wait?

Yes, I thought I had to wait until at least 20 weeks for our eggs. But some of my girls are looking like they might start any day now. It is a long wait, it seems (5 of our girls are 18.5 weeks and 3 of them are only 15 weeks). I keep looking though. Since we free range, I send my kids on...

    Free-Ranging in English Ivy

Hi, My family lives in the redwoods and all that grows here is English Ivy. It's a wonderful plant and it keeps the mountain up off our property, but I wonder if it is ok for my chickens to free range in it.
