Approximately how many weeks old must an avg CX reach before it will likely be contained by 3" electrified poultry netting? I've heard young chicks will just pass through the openings. CX grow so fast, I'm thinking it must not take too long. Thanks!
I appreciate the feedback and encouragement. I'm impressed that you can do 25-30 birds/day solo. I have 4 sons and a DH, so hopefully we'll be able to get an assembly line going. Starting with a smaller number seems like a good idea while we work out the system.
It's funny but I don't even...
So Meyer is refunding me the cost of the birds with dark wings and muffs. They said their most likely guess is that the chicks are Wheaten Olive Eggers. No idea what gender they are.
The white birds are probably just Meyer's version of White Rocks.
So far all the birds are happy and...
Those are super cool. Unfortunately, I don't think there are any of those around. I even heard some extension offices rent poultry processing set-ups, but ours doesn't.
I hadn't thought about the benefit of learning to perform chicken autopsies. But it makes a lot of sense as a way to monitor flock health. Yes, I'm planning to move pens frequently to help keep the area clean. Better than a gym membership-. I have been looking at pluckers and the...
Any guesses as to what they might be?
I admit to being peeved about having to brood chicks I don't really want. I already have a small flock of layers and specifically wanted to breed WRs.
Thank you. 4 of the 12 have the darker coloring. I hope those aren't the 4 pullets. Any idea what they might be? I ordered these from Meyers specifically to breed WRs.
I recently ordered 12 White Plymouth Rocks (WR), 4 pullets and 12 straight run. Their hatch date was July 17th. So they are about 10 days old and just getting their feathers. Some of the chicks have dark wings and tail feathers, while others have white wings. I've raised WRs before and I...
This is all great info! You've both given me things to think about. We actually moved to the country with the idea of doing pastured meat for a living (keeping our day jobs as well). So we've looked into the legal issues. We're in a pretty friendly state with regards to pastured poultry. I'm...
I just moved to the country and want to start raising large batches of CX on pasture. I want to start with a batch of 50 for my family and perhaps work up to batches of several hundred for sale. Several years ago, we did a test batch of 11 CX, and while the chicken ended up tasting fine....the...
Just wanted to post the response I received from McMurray. I asked in an email 1) Are these chickens hybrids and 2) Do they breed true? This is the response.
"Our Delaware Broiler will provide more meat then comparable Heritage birds, but retain the great characteristics that make this bird a...

Interesting. I am eager to hear what folks' experiences are with breeding them. Strange for them to use the word "hybrid" in the company's blog post.
Have you harvested any of yours yet Wolfwalker? I'm in Arizona as well and am looking for a more sustainable meat bird option.
