    Surviving Minnesota!

I have a sensitivity to soy. I was getting nasty headaches and they completely disappeared when I cut out soy. Since I avoid it like the plague in my food, figured it’s prob a good idea not to give it to our chickens. Corn I am not totally against because I realize it provides energy and helps...

    Surviving Minnesota!

Yea, not cheap that's for sure. Might look into mixing my own or just using it sparingly as a base and then amend it with some supplements

Thanks for the tips about the amendments to the feed. I like that blog a lot and she actually recommends Scratch and Peck as a base!

    Paddock System in Permanent Run?

Duluthralphie these pics are great! Do you ever get any predators trying to breach through the top (such as climbers...racoons etc?). There are a lot of trees around our run and I am nervous that if I just do netting on top that I will have some uninvited visitors "dropping" in. Almost wondering...

    Surviving Minnesota!

Hi Guys! I'm back after a winter hiatus....we get our 15 hens this week and I am elbow deep in chicken raising right now. I thought of my experts over here for some questions I have....here's my first of many..... -I am trying to find organic soy-free AND corn-free feed (starter right now). I...

    Paddock System in Permanent Run?

Good point here. I am so new to this you guys...I didn't realize you could do deep litter in a run. I thought that was only a coop thing. I had wanted to do DL method in the coop but there is a linoleum floor and from what I have read, DL doesn't really work unless there is a dirt floor. Now I...

    Surviving Minnesota!

Cool! I am most excited for a silkie, they are beautiful. Shoot no sexed Silkies though huh? Def not interested in a Roo at this point. Esp not with my littles running around! And April/May it is, thanks for the input!

Thanks for the info RE order dates. My kiddos are littles yet (all 3 under 5) so no showing at this point. Just lots of toddling up to collect eggs and try to get them back to the house intact :)

    Surviving Minnesota!

Besides the birds looking nicer, are there other things/qualities/etc that make you happier with the breeder birds? Just trying to figure out which route I want to take.

    Surviving Minnesota!

Thanks you guys! I had heard McMurray Murray was the place to order from but I was thinking there was a 25 chick minimum for orders. Others have brought up a good point on breeders vs hatcheries. I knew nothing about the difference but just did some prelim reading. I don't plan to show any and...

    Hatchery vs. Breeder?

Silly question, but are you using them in your coop or just in your compost. We are swimming in leaves right now and I'm wondering if we need to change our approach to them which is blow most of them into the woods and mulch the rest into the lawn with the mower.

    Paddock System in Permanent Run?

Thanks for the pic! Brrrr just looking at that makes me shiver for what's to come. Thanks for the explanation too! We are considering 14 ga like yours or wood posts with HC. Can't quite decide!

    Paddock System in Permanent Run?

rosemarythyme thanks so much for the pic. Totally makes sense now that I see it. I think we may go with an idea such as this...a main run and then a fenced in "vegetation" run. Might try to put the grass/plant filled raised beds in there that have HC on the top to prevent the girls from digging...

    Surviving Minnesota!

You guys, I am going to have too many newbie questions on here :)...I apologize in advance. Trying to figure out when to place my chick order. Books say at 6 wks to introduce them to the coop as long as night temps are above 50. In the Twin Cities, that puts us into late May, early June. So...

    Paddock System in Permanent Run?

I see. So you just either use a broom or shovel/plow the space under the netting then?

Do you have any pics you can send? Having a hard time visualizing the "T" set up

    Paddock System in Permanent Run?

I also wonder about the weight of the snow with netting. From what I have read, tarps are a pain because they don't hold up. I am thinking perhaps kennel tarps/flys might be the way to go or just bite the bullet and do some time of metal or clear plastic corrugate on part of the run that I want...
