Thanks. I've ended up swapping the eggs, so that they are back under their own mums (sort of, quite hard to tell in the dark). One egg is pipping and I can hear it squeaking too, so hopefully 2 babies soon. In the morning if mum is not mothering too well I'll take the babies off her and raise...
In short, 2 brooding chickens (Olivia and Victoria) due 2 weeks apart. Olivia's eggs began hatching today and 1 baby born. Then Olivia abandoned nest and baby, stole Victoria's eggs and began sitting on them.
We gave Olivia's eggs to Victoria, but she kept pecking at baby, so we gave baby...
We found our 2 labs were overly interested in the chickens and did try to taste them when we first brought them home. But after a few weeks of slow integration with monitoring and strict protection of chickens and voice commands etc for dogs, they all get on really well.
When we eat outside...
Ahhh, thank you so much. It might sound silly, but I didn't realise that just switching brand would have such a big difference. Glad its not something much worse or our rooster.
We'll switch out our feed when the shops open tomorrow and go back to the one we usually use.
and the label has a...
Actually its the first time we went with this feed as I bought it because it was made locally in our town. I couldn't see a mill date. I noticed (now) that it is called scratch layer blend - is this different to other normal mixes? It has the following:
course grain mix made of wheat...
No signs of nasal discharge. I didn't quarantine him (yeah I know that's wrong). But he still has a bright red comb and only the girls combs are going pale.
I'll check mill date of feed, it was only bought last week from our agricultural store.
I didn't see any mites, just thought I should treat just in case they had any with their combs going pale. Our feed is well in date, but generally they get most of their food from free ranging. Their poo doesn't seem to have changed, but then again its sort of hard to tell as it all just likes...
Our 4 hens combs are turning pale. A month ago we got a rooster for our 4 hens. Our girls are still laying everyday and no signs of odd behaviour or illness except that there combs are turning pale pink. The rooster still has a bright red comb.
As a precaution, we have dusted them a few days...
I think your right, and I don't think her nest was the best either - her sister nest seems a lot better. She is being a good mum, but not sure is she could have managed too many more babies.
Hopefully next time, as you said, she'll be better with a bit more maturity.
Thank you. We only have 2 babies now as Mommas sister, who is sitting on eggs, killed one of the babies. I had heard of drakes doing this so we separated them, but not other girl ducks.
Thought I'd let everyone know the outcome.
Momma was leaving nest a lot, so on Friday I decided to take the eggs. I thought I'd see if they were fertile and how far they had come along (yes disgusting, but I just had to know)
1 had pipped to outside, fully absorbed yolk and died.
2 had no...
i have a young first time mummy duck who sat on 17 eggs. Just before hatching she threw 3 out of nest (obviously not fertile).
Monday morning (right on day 35) she accidentally drowned her first baby, we think she was trying to help it out of shell and she put it (still in shell) in a her water...
