Buff Orpington cockerels: Just making sure...

After having 3 of our 8-week old chickens crowing for a week, loud 4-note crows, I’m pretty sure we have some cockerels that need a new home. Posting some pics for some final observations. They have big combs (I was told buff orpington hens don’t develop combs until closer to starting to lay)...

3 buff Orpington cockerels needing a home in Central Florida

My daughter is raising 10 buff Orpington chickens for a commercial egg laying hen program. The chickens are 8 weeks old, 3 of them have nice bright, red combs and have been consistently crowing for over a week now. We cannot keep the cockerels, and would like to find them a loving home. WOULD...

Buff Orpington - What gender is this?

This thread has been a great help! I have 10 chickens, 8 wks old, 5 have nice bright red combs, and 2 of those have been consistently crowing for over a week. I know they’re still young, but will check for saddle feathers and spur knobs today, as we cannot keep the roosters. Picture in the...

    Too early to crow?

Lol, they want to make sure we don’t need have fertilized eggs. My daughter is supposed to auction her best 3 hens out of the 10. She may now have 4-5 to choose from instead of the 10 we expected.

    Too early to crow?

The roos are actually the friendliest! They like to be held and pet.

    Too early to crow?

They will be moved to an outside coop next Monday. They are 7 weeks old tomorrow. The “roos” pick fights when they bump against each other, while the smaller ones just avoid any confrontation or may do a quick reaction if provoked, like a snap, and then walk away. The people running the program...

    Too early to crow?

we have now split our 10 chickens into two groups, 6 and 4. There are 4 larger ones in the group of 6, with bright red combs. In the last two days, they have been picking fights with each other, while the ones without combs just stay away. There’s a pic of the group of 6, the four “cockerels”...

    Too early to crow?

Yes, one of our crowers has very thick legs and is larger in size than the rest. And we had 1 more crowing this morning after we took the other one out. So I feel pretty confident we have at least 2 cockerels.

    Too early to crow?

So pretty! I’ve seen pics of hens with larger and brighter combs than yours. Is it possible some of my “seem to be cockarels” are just pullets developing faster? I’ve only identified 2 crowers...

    Too early to crow?

This is an educational project through a county program. It’s for egg laying hens, but it seems everyone participating has more than 1 cockerel, judging by those fast growing combs. We were told 1 in 10 was possible, but half of them may well mean straight run! The students are supposed to...

    Too early to crow?

We have 5 with red combs and 5 with nothing. So those with combs Arévalo possibly all cockerels?!?!? Thank you for your reply! We have 5 with distinct red combs and 5 with nothing. Is it safe to assume we may have 5 cockerels in our group?!?!?

    The things I’ve learned...

Hello everyone! Raising chickens is a new experience for my family. My daughter is raising 10 buff Orpington as part of a year long project for her Agriscience class. I’ve learned so much from reading about your experiences, that have decided to join in and benefit even more from your knowledge...

    Too early to crow?

My daughter is raising 10 buff Orpington for her Agriscience class. They’re supposed to be hens, 6.5 weeks so old. The last 3 mornings, we’ve heard what seems to be a serious attempt at crowing, each day from a different one. I’ve heard comb size/color is not a good indicator, but the “crowers”...
