do you stay with your flock while free ranging?

I free ranged my flock during the day last year and basically got wiped out . Went from 12 to 2 in a matter of just a few months. The hawks got very brave and smart. Now I have built the flock back up and they only get out for a few hours in the evening and they are always put up before I leave...

    lethargic ameraucana pullet ***Update*****

I have an ameracauna pullet that is doing the same thing. Seems to be eating and drinking but wants to sleep standing up. Not usually able to catch this particular pullet but now I can with no problems. I seperated her from the others just in case. Not sure what is going on.

Why are my broodies so stupid?!!

I have the same problem and cannot seperate my broodie from the rest. I mark only the eggs I want her to have and remove all others every day. It seems to work for the time.

    Emergency rearranging

Ran into the same problem. White silkie has been broody for over 6 weeks. Left her 3 eggs, finally hatched out one but she was not happy and just kept sitting, 2 days later I took the chick which is now in the brooder. the hen is still being broody and now has a companion that wants to be broody...

At what point should I put my pullet's outside full time?

I live in Florida. Daytime temps in the 90's and night in the upper 60's. I stuck my pullets out at 3 weeks. Kept flying out of the brooder. They are doing just fine. Have had no problems.

    sex my bantams

I had the same issue. Bought 4 Ameracaunas all were supposed to be pullets, well I guess no one told one of them because he is a she. Not exactly what I needed. But at least I have found a possible home for him.

Broody hen issue (left eggs for a few hours)

I have a broody silkie that I let her keep several eggs to hatch. I marked the one for her and take all the others since the other hens try to lay in the same nest. She seem to be doing fine.

Best dog breed around chickens? UPDATE post #117 Thanks all!

I have an Austrailian shepherd who is great at working cattle and horses, but has also taken on the duties of chick herder. He definitely makes sure that nothing bothers them. He is really great with the chickens, but I agree in that any dog can learn to get along with them you just need to make...

    Are they ALL that crazy.???

I fed mine spagetti and you would have thought I was giving candy to little kids. They raced around the pen with pieces hanging from their beaks. Quite entertaining.

    Farm cats and chickens.

I have an 18lb neutered male farm cat that only had to have a hen with chicks ran at him once to know to stay away. He will sleep in the middle of them when they are out in the yard. He has a strong predator instinct but not with the chickens. He seems to know they are not fair game.

Day old American Game Birds in the same Broder with older birds?

I do not think so. Right now I have 10day, 1 week, and 2 day old chicks in the same brooder and so far they seem to be doing fine. No pecking or crowding going on yet.

Mom hen abandoned her chick... this is getting crazier!

I had the same thing happen of sorts. I had two hens sitting at the same time. One hens eggs hatched the other hens eggs did not, so they both started raisng the one chick. I think the aunt was more protective than its real mom. At night you would see the mom with the chick under her and the...

    Living with the predator.......

I have an Austrailian Shepherd that has never looked twice at my chickens. He will even go in and lay with them. I have never had any problems with my guys bothering any of the free range girls. My outside cat does not even mess with the hens.

    Hawks.

Good luck. I have lost 8 to hawks in the last 2 months. I finally had to totally not free range my laying hens. They now have a totally inclosed outside pen. The hawks do not however seem to mess with the game hens that are free ranging in the yard.
