Someone on Facebook recommended that to me and said it worked. She said it even scared away the foxes. I'm not sure I'm entirely convinced. I can sometimes go for quite a while without a hawk attack. I get the impression that with a little bit of patience they may just move out on their own. My...
Thanks, that is helpful. I was thinking of building my runs at 16x8. But space isn't really a huge issue (cost more so). How many chickens will you keep in 18x20 at a time while breeding?
I'm in Florida so I do an open style coop as well. So, building wise, did you basically just build a pen for each breed plus a separate bachelor pad pen? How large are your runs?
That is my next project. I am planning on hatching a few eggs out of a borrowed incubator next month. But my real desire is to set up some breeding pins. Do you have any picture or recommendations on forums or articles on how to set up breeding pens?
Also, I just read your signatures. I love...
Kristoff sounds like a roosters name, but she was a hen. That's because we have a 3yr old girl whose obsessed with Frozen picking out our names. Actually, my rooster had run off to the other side of our property. I am assuming he is a scaredy roo as well.
We have about 4 acres behind our house...
Thanks, that's not a bad suggestion. I have been letting them free range during the day, but I am going to stop that for a while. I have an old dog kennel that is pretty large, but doesn't have a roof. I was thinking of getting some replacement chickens but didn't want to add them straight to...
I have lost another chicken to a hawk. This time it was our Olive Egger, Kristoff. Interesting thing is that shortly after the attack I couldn't find any of the other chickens. They had all hidden themselves, mostly digging themselves up under a fallen tree. Once I did find them, I had to pull...

I'm not sure what the predator was. The coop is in a wooded area so most of the time the chickens were free ranging well under cover. The first two died deep enough under some brush that I am pretty sure it wasn't a hawk or other sort of flying predator. Also, for these two chickens I only saw...
I have recently started keeping some chickens. I started with 4 chicks (Leghorn, Black Sex Link, Ira Brown, and an EE). We moved to a new home where I inherited 5 RIRs. I have recently lost 3 to predators and I was given a RIR rooster. I joined here to learn some more about the rooster and...
