For some reason, I didn't get your reply notification in a timely manner. She is probably around 6 weeks now. It does seem to be better, but not 100%. But you are right, she does great with the flock. Thanks for responding.
I have 7 ducklings, all have had Metzer's waterfowl booster, duckling starter, & peas. During outside playtime on Wednesday, we noticed 1 duckling ( yes, a Pekin) had a foot turning inward & it was stepping on it. In a panic, I researched your informational thread on niacin deficiency & rushed...
With Corona panic, I've been off work & now have 21 eggs starting to hatch. The first one started yesterday & now I've been called into work for next 4 days. I'll be gone approximately 9 hours at a time. Any advice? Silly, I know, but I'm super sad to be missing the whole process & even more...
Oh my goodness! You can't wipe this smile away! What a gorgeous baby! Yeah, you definitely have me rethinking this whole thing. And I totally get what you mean by the friendliness of the Welshie & the independance of the Cayuga. My heart can't take it! ❤
I was super anxious about the thought of mine mixing, even separating breeds to collect eggs. Now you have my wheels turning. I, too, would love to see pictures! Thanks for your reply!
Awh, congratulations! We must have similar taste! I keep Welsh Harlequin ducks & have for years, but recently adopted Cayugas. I'm on day 25 with 16 Welshies & 4 Cayugas in incubator. Mine aren't mixed (yet):lau I'd love to know how yours are doing & see pix.
Well, little did I realize it's been exactly 2 years ago that I had to rescue & hatch some Welsh Harlequin ducklings from a young momma on Mother's Day. Here I am again, but this time, by choice, w/ 16 Welshies & 4 Cayugas on day 25 & I AM NERVOUS. :fl Should I be increasing humidity? (Been...
I have seen a red fox trot off with a pekin that was twice his size, holding him horizontally with his teeth clenched, & prancing away effortlessly. I walked out just in time, chased him, screamed, & he dropped the duck.
I mentioned before that I started farming knowing nothing, as a way of helping another... which included six pekins that free ranged from birth. One by one they've been picked off by a hawk. I had three left about two weeks ago, that refused to come off frozen pond. I woke up one morning & only...
My Welsh Harlequin:
Drakes are Moby Duck & Sonny (Moby not pictured)
Hens are Piper, Puddles, Pansey, Buttercup, & Downy
Although they were way more interested in their pool being thawed out today than they were taking a pic!
Another idea is to look at Metzer Farm's duck comparison chart from their site. It shows which carry the traits that you are looking for: good layers, good mothers, flying ability, meat birds, personalities... It was key to making my selection. Hope this helps!
I, too, am a mom to Welshies! I have 7, with 2 being drakes. They are FULL of personality & super friendly if you work w/ them. My 4 year old can feed them from her hand. And yes, males' bills are black for the first few days after birth. The only time they get loud is when they hear or see me &...
I sincerely LOL when I read this. No one here understands my "thing" with these ducks. I'm not so sure I do. So, indeed, it's a relief to be in good company!
