Red Foxes! How do I get rid of them?

We just built a very big and strong chicken run. Call it "Fort Clucks". 4x4 as posts, tall ones, cattle fencing with metal hard ware cloth all around the bottom so raccoons can't reach in and snatch babies. Then 1 inch chicken wire over all the open top, with guide wires to help hold it up...

Show me your solutions for a muddy mucky chicken yard!

Mulch... I get a local tree service guy to drop off his mulch, and place it in our muddy areas with all the rain we have, I also throw bird seed mix into it, so green things come up for the chickens to eat.

How to RAISE a good rooster.

Our roosters are raised, pretty much, "hands off" as stated prior here. I do carry a stick into the field, like a walking stick, 2 of our roosters have been a bit "forward", and all I have to do is point the stick at them, and they cut a wide berth and show their respect. Our roosters know we...

    Fox problem

We keep a radio on. On a talk station, the local news, political radio "shows" are on going, NASCAR, baseball, what have you, some of the speakers get real excited, and this seems to upset the wildlife. I learned this trick from some farmers in the hill of Virginia. Mr Fox has stopped coming...

    Deterring night time predators?

We have secured every where we can, a metal "fabric" around the base, no ability to dig under, a metal "fabric on the ground at least 2 feet out. the run area has a covering to keep the hawks out. Last, but not least, (I have learned this from some real ole timers) A radio, but on a talk...

    Electric poultry netting

Chicken wire, chain link fence,or "cattle fencing" (large holes) allow for raccoons to reach through and pull chicks out....We went with the metal fabric, very small holes to keep our birds safe

    transition to coop

Ours were moved into the coop, with "cattle fencing" between them and the rest for a few days. Then we removed the fencing and every body did fine!

3rd time to have to sign up. what's up?

Sorry, no, I've thought of getting the polish but have not yet. I'm in NE TN, we have "Mother hen hatchery", they are on face book, they have some polish and probably can help.

My Neighbor shot at Me and My Chickens This Morning

This is an Excellent thing to do! we have done it, I don't think it was quite $300.00. we have 2 sensors, each with it's own alert, so we know where to look when it goes off. they are good for a quarter mile, got them from amazon on the advice of our constable (due to crazy ex husband from 10...

My Neighbor shot at Me and My Chickens This Morning

I do hear those peacocks can be very territorial and quite a "guard dog"

My Neighbor shot at Me and My Chickens This Morning

From NE TN here. So grateful for the neighbors we have! No one has ever complained of our 2 roosters and 24 hens! We are a bit rural, farms, but condos moving in, The City just reached out and "incorporated" us a few years ago against everybody's desire.... so that battle still rages... But...

3rd time to have to sign up. what's up?

I have kept chickens for at least 5 years now. I also seem to keep "loosing" my "membership" here. Kinda frustrating. We have 26 chickens right now, 2 roosters and 24 layers. A wide variety of breeds and everybody seems happy. I joined the first time to get information, the 2nd time to give and...

Broody Hen raising day old chicks now what

Usually we make our broody hen go for a full 2 weeks, she is SO proud of her brood when she gets them on the 15th to 16 night. Now, we let another hen brood for 2 weeks and she was an awful mother, had to take the babies from her. I like the idea of even waiting 18 days!
