Hi, I have two, maybe three birds who are sick. The first one has been sick for three days with lethargy, diarrhea, difficulty walking (she waddles slowly), shrunken and pale comb and wattles, and a red swollen belly. It looked to me like internal laying, which I know I can't do anything about...
You are right. On further inspection, she has puncture wounds and a broken wing. We are also missing another chicken. Our niece came over and l collected eggs without our permission and left the nest box open. Our chicken sitter said she saw a girl collecting the eggs. Sitter came in and closed...
I have a flock of 17, multiple breeds. I went away on vacation for two weeks (my neighbor was looking after them), and I found one of my cream leg bars in a pretty bad state. Lethargic, eye black and so crusted over I thought it had gotten pecked out, one wing drooping, and hard, dry, crusty...
I ended up finally seeing a tapeworm and larvae in the stool, but it took a lot of digging. I treated them with Equimax, a horse wormer, and so far no more diarrhea and hoping this is the key to making them better. There are different meds for different parasites, unfortunately. And you can also...
Thank you so much, everyone, for your expertise, time, and patience.
I dosed them all early this morning with the Equimax and really want to see a load of worms come out. I so desperately want to fix this problem. Lots in my life (and the world) out of control right now, but maybe at least this...
That makes sense about the subjectivity of the "pea size." Do you guys weigh your birds or are you guessing? I have 18 hens of all sizes, from a tiny silkie to a giant Wyandotte. I don't have a scale.
Yes, I definitely think the issue is tapes now. I actually found a tapeworm today.
The only medicine I can get my hands on (without a prescription) is the Equimax horse paste. Would this work? How much paste would I need to put on bread to be effective? A pea size would be about 10 mg? Sorry...
On second thought, I'm thinking about not treating for tapeworm as I don't think it's the problem. I have been digging through poo for a month and a half, and this is the first time I have seen the tapes. My hens don't free range, so I doubt many of them have tapes. Hoping that the CORID and the...
So all of them had empty crops this morning.
I gave them the pyrantel because that's what I could get my hands on, and they are on CORID for 7 days. Here is a fresh, bloody stool. What do you think?
Everyone had empty crops this morning, and I treated them with parental. But I think I found...
They are between a little over a year and seven years. Also, when I provided grit today, most of them GOBBLED it down. I hadn't been giving them girt before because they live in a 400 square foot pen in rocky soil, but maybe that was a mistake? They get a lot of "treats" (weeds, table scraps...
I will look for Valbazen at Tractor and Supply. I feel kind of desperate that I want to do this ASAP.
Some of my chickens are pooping clear liquid. Could this be blackhead? I sure hope not. Vets here won't treat chickens:(
Also, when I provided grit today, most of them GOBBLED it down. I...
Darn! I just read that Safeguard shouldn't be given to molting chickens as it damages the growing feathers. Almost all my hens are molting right now. Pyrantel Pamoate is recommended for molting hens. Does anyone have any experience with this? Pyrantel is a human worming med.
The oldest are 7 yrs. Youngest are a little over a year. None of them are new, but they do have a large dirt run, and while wild birds can't eat or drink with the hens, they do sit in the trees that grow over it. I can tell you they don't have tapeworms because I have never seen the telltale...
For about a month and a half, I've noticed many of my flock of 18 hens seem to be wasting away. Symptoms: severe weight loss, a variety of weird poops and diahrea, and hyperactivity, ravenous (they are eating feathers). Week one: rubbed them down with DE and thoroughly disinfected everything and...
I did def see lice on one bird, and I rubbed everyone with DE seven days ago and will repeat today. Is DE totally affective on lice? How soon should I see weight gain after treatment? Everyone is eating and drinking, but they seem ravenous. It could be my imagination. I gave the sickest hen oral...
At this point, I'm hoping it was the cucumbers, and the underweight birds will fatten up soon. They are currently on chick starter feed with probiotics. The super skinny ones get scrambled eggs, too. I used one round of Wazine to deworm and looked for worms in the stool after treatment and...
