Thank y'all so much for the suggestions! I've taken everyone's advice into consideration and y'all have helped me come up with an answer!
I enjoyed reading through and admiring many others' chicken coops via the links that were suggested and was considering messaging my favorite to ask if I...
Have camera - will travel!
I'm looking for a nice looking coop or area where your chickens are free ranging and friendly enough to be in photos with me, my husband, and my son.
Here is my idea - we want to announce our pregnancy with a picture of us with chickens and we are going to hold up...
I LOVE your coop! This is a dream coop! I love the big new area you created. You will really enjoy that nice space to visit with your chickens. Oh, and they will enjoy the extra space, too! hahaha Thanks for the plexiglass tip!
Hey! Just wanted to give everyone an update in case you are interested. Since building their new home, there hasn't been ANY issues with Amelia, the pecker! I let them free range during the day sometimes, and they go in their barn at night. Here are some pictures of their home that they have...
Hey everyone! I got 12 baby pullets, 5 different breeds, on March 1, 2018. One of my Buff Orpingtons, that is supposed to be a female, is developing faster than the rest and I believe she may be a rooster and am hoping I can get some opinions. I'm more of a "count your chickens before they...
I was able to extend their cage to the next section so it is 4 square feet bigger now.
I didn't isolate Amelia.
I added a tub of sand, sticks, and wind treats to their cage to give them something to do.
I let a few of them at a time outside to play every day that it isn't raining or really cold...
I can see overcrowding since they technically need 4-16 more square feet for their age. I am working on extending their space but we don't have the right tool to cut the metal and are going to buy one soon.
Overheating is not an issue. I have a thermometer in there and it is technically too...
Update: After watching the chicks closely, I noticed that one of my EE's was pecking the others so they would get off the MHP! She and my Barred Rock are the only ones with no peck marks. I think she is the only one doing the pecking! What would you do?
Oh wow that is definitely not enough room then. It's only 2 ft by 4 ft. I'll see tomorrow about extending it and moving the blanket back more. Thanks for the tips, everyone!
I don't know the protein level off hand. I will check tomorrow!! Good suggestion!
The cage is sectioned off that way so I put them in the biggest part. If it can be done without destroying it I might open up another section or two.
Here is the new cage! They are only in the far right quarters which is 4' by 2'. Last night the thermometer was only measuring 70 under the heat lamp so that's when I added the MHP.
Rebrascora, I tried to get big boxes yesterday, but went to 5 stores and the largest boxes I got was banana boxes-...
Update: After working hard on their new home ALL DAY, at 9:45pm, we have officially moved them to their new stage 2 brooder outside in the carport/tool shed that is three times the size of their other one. We added a MHP to their new home as well. In the 15 minutes that I watched them mingle in...
My chicks are about 3 weeks old and I've had them for two weeks. I just noticed today that most of them have what appears to be peck marks on their backs! Feathers are missing, and some are even bleeding! What is going on and why??
- It's the same spot on all of them.
- Some have it worse than...
How difficult is it to clean such a large space out? Where are the chicks when you are cleaning? What is hardware cloth? I might try to make something like this.
What is MHP?
On another note, what part of ME do you live in? I used to live in Bangor, Charleston, and Kenduskeag! My Dad still lives in Bangor and my sis in Holden.
Ok, sure enough my local grocery store has one and is holding it for me! Genius! Please tell me how you modified it. I think I'm seeing contact paper on bottom? Tell me how you made those nifty lids!
