update! Got the front of chicken castle landscaped and set up with the planters and bird houses. It's really starting to come together now. I've also put in new play perches for the ladies. I"ve got some good video of the first time they've used them. If I could figure how to post it. Off...
Got the front of the coop landscaped this weekend! It's really starting to come together. It is the envy of the neighborhood. Everyone comes over to sit and watch the ladies. LOL.
I know this is the chicken behavior thread.. but human behavior is kinda related... Am I the only one that comes home after a long stressful day and just sits in the coop watching the birds to de-stress? There is nothing better than to come home and sit with the birds and hand feed them some...
Excellent! I love the use of the space. The design looks VERY good. I wouldn't have done anything different myself. Lots of room, easy access, good venting. You've got it all. Excellent job on your first coop. Thumbs up brother!
I did the 1/2"x1/2" everywhere on the coop and run. Yes it was expensive. But worth it. Nothing short of a human size racoon with wire cutters can get in. It has already withstood an attempt by our neighbors 60lb dog. We didn't shell out the full amount at once, we split the construction...
I'm preparing to run one to my castle coop as well. Once I drill a hole just big enough for the cord to fit through I will secure it on the inside, out of reach of the ladies and fill the gaps in the wall with caulking. I'm thinking of putting a heat lamp in there for the winter, a fan...
This is what I have on my egg doors, I use tractor cotter pins to secure everything. I was going to use combo locks, but we have the neighbors check on the birds every now and then.
The birds will destroy your garden. If not by eating everything you don't want them to, then by digging and scratching. If you want the poo for your garden you might think about a compost pile for the coop droppings. I've just started this myself, so don't have any real data on it yet. I...
Thanks everyone! I've come to realize that the coop will always be 99% finished. I will always be wanting to tweak here, expand there, or make something easier for me and the birds. I already wish I had made it bigger for more birds. The next project may be a tractor of some sort so I can...
It's been about a week since the birdies have been in the new coop. We had to go and put them to bed for the first 4 nights. But friday night they went to bed on their own! I was able to use the drawbridge and lock them in without going into the the coop! Of course I went in anyways to tell...

Excellent Idea! I kept mine locked up in the coop for 1 solid day to try this out.. but of course my daughter who had not been informed of the plan let them out the next day... Last night they went in all by themselves!! The wife and I were so happy!!! I'm still smiling. It's the...
Excellent design! I am very impressed. No I don't think it's ugly at all. Couldn't tell from the pics if you used 2x4's for roosts or not. You may consider them with rounded edges. They are a little easier on the birds feet and they can squat over their toes better to fight frostbite...
