Eww . . . what is this on her head?

Hey! Thank you! I appreciate any and all help. I'm still new to the nursing of chickens but I want to do the very best possible for them. Whatever it was has resolved on its own apparently but that's good information to stick in under my hat. Gracias!

Eww . . . what is this on her head?

Oh my gosh -- that looks awful! No -- not that. I went out to the coop and she actually let me pet / examine her! There's nothing there -- just felt soft and it smoothed out -- but then it kind of tufted up again once she moved around again. I bet you're right, maybe it's just feather mussing...

Eww . . . what is this on her head?

No, nothing sticky -- almost looks like ticks embedded to me -- does that happen? I'm going to have to get ahold of her and examine. She's pretty skittish on a good day, so we'll see what fiasco that brings! ;-) Thank you -- I'll read the article now.

Eww . . . what is this on her head?

This is Cora, my gold-laced Wyandotte. She's 19 weeks old and I'd noticed over the past couple of days that she had "spots" on her head -- tonight I got a better look and was able to get a few shots on the phone. What is it? What do I do to rid her of it?

I loved this -- thank you! The breakdown of the days and weeks and appropriate actions to take are instructive and a nice way to gauge one's interaction with their chicks. Great job!

Happy Father's Day! -- or -- The Coop Dad Helped Me Build

HEY!! AART! I remember looking at your coop when I was looking at every coop on the site for ideas! You had so many great pictures and had painstakingly considered every aspect of your coop. When I just now looked at your page, I recognized the shed right away and remembered the picture of your...

    Show off your diy coop!

Have a bit more staining to do, adding a rail and banister to the porch area, a real roof on the run in the fall, and professional landscape beds all around the entire structure. Then it will be what I consider finished.

    Raccoons are savage

That would be devastating to my psyche as I imagine it was for you. I'm so sorry for your losses. Yes, protect your flock as humanely as possible -- shoot to kill, electrify, whatever. Wow -- thanks everyone for commenting on this. Still learning and watching myself. This is wild west territory.

    Hen or Roo? Ameraucana

She looks so much like mine -- hatched a day or two before! Girl! Oh -- and I named her Philly because I didn't know if she was a Phillip or a Philomena -- BYC pros told me pullet, so I was in the same situation as you. That impressive headdress is the cause for the pause.

Happy Father's Day! -- or -- The Coop Dad Helped Me Build

As it's Father's Day, I thought it might be a good time to show what a great dad I have! I've long wanted to raise chickens as pets and as a bonus, collect their eggs. The time was right this spring to roll up my sleeves and wade into the water. I bought 10 one or two day old chicks at the local...

I have to ask too -- pullet or roo?

:hugs I just discovered where the emoticons are! HA! Rosy is my welsummer!!? Well, I'll be! That's totally believable because I got them all as day old chicks and thought I'd followed them all correctly. Probably hadn't right from the start. Farm and Home had the unidentified ones in the...

I have to ask too -- pullet or roo?

Yeah -- the things you don't know when you're a newbie and looking at hundreds of little fluffy balls to pick from! Ha ha! No matter -- I love all of them.

Oh my gosh -- you two just made me laugh and my heart sing!! YES!! Thank you! Philly doesn't have much of a comb yet . . .

I have to ask too -- pullet or roo?

Hello everyone -- amazing community here, I'm so thankful to get to follow people's questions and the many detailed and thoughtful responses. My chickens are Farm and Home bought so I didn't have a lot of input into what chick they pulled out other than "one of those, two of them", etc. They...
