Help! Buff Orp head feather loss, smaller size, smaller comb

I took her into our sunroom for the overnight (in kennel). She drank and ate, went to bed fairly quietly. Poop looks healthy. I let her outside when the girls came out for the morning. She seems okay with good appetite. Chickens have huge pen but spend most of their time quasi free range. We...

Help! Buff Orp head feather loss, smaller size, smaller comb

Okay, thank you! I did look carefully through her feathers by her neck and by her vent. I even looked under the wings and in all three places it look like she has new feathers coming in. I looked at her legs carefully there is no sign of leg scale mites or anything like that. Maybe she underwent...

Help! Buff Orp head feather loss, smaller size, smaller comb

I don't see mites or lice. I don't know if she stopped laying. Is it possible she started molting? She is only 8 months old or so.

Help! Buff Orp head feather loss, smaller size, smaller comb

So I thought I noticed that one of my three buff Orp's look a little small recently. Today I noticed that she has significant feather loss around her head and her comb looks diminished and pale. Anybody have any idea what's going on? And should I separate her from the rest of the chickens?

We finalized the design for a full height 7 x 8 shed design that will be the coop. The chickens will have access to outside in a large pen most of the time and quasi free-ranging with additional pens and a large fenced in garden (we have a lot of property). I plan to rotate them often so they...

    Considering partitioning shed for coop

Thank you for your response! We quickly decided to scrap the idea, but I am still curious, nonetheless. Thanks also for the link on ventilation. In planning our coop and we want to make sure there is enough passive ventilation for the winter when the adjustable windows wont be opened. :thumbsup

    Considering partitioning shed for coop

So we are considering partitioning a shed so that we can store the usual tools and lawn mower on one side and fashion a chicken coop on the other. The coop side already has its own window, full size door and we will make modifications regarding ventilation, roosts, nesting box, chicken door, but...

    Hello, All!

Haha! Well, we HAVE already discussed future furry possibilities. We will see how chickens go, then maybe later on we will add some goats and a donkey or alpaca. I definitely want to keep bees, which will be next but that will have to wait until next year. There is much to do on the property...

    Hello, All!

Hi Everyone! Thanks for the add. We are new to raising chickens. Just over a year ago my fiancé and I purchased a 200+ year old farmhouse on 9+ acres in upstate New York. We decided to try to move toward self-sufficiency or at least as close as suburbanites can get, and so this spring we are...
