    something you need to know

I read that Target article in the NYT...yikes!! Problem is, if using a credit card, or any shopper club cards, your Zip is the least of what they have on you!! I've never worried to much about it until the whole NAIS thing came to a head years ago. I'm still a bit flighty, and will usually...

    I screwed up at work

Back in school, I worked in one of those offices in the reception pool. It was me and 4 older women, and they lived to backbite, whine and generally create drama. The thing is, the other women in the same department were just fine, none of the bs that existed with the receptionists. The angry...

    Murry McMurry hatchery

My DH and I drove to MMcM on Sunday to pick up our chicks...it was a 4 hour drive each way, but I was in desperate need of a cabin fever-busting road trip, so this fit the bill. The gal at there said that they'd had problems with the PO (I'd asked about KY specifically) last week, but that...

Not Turning Shipped Eggs For the First Three Days....Why?

Ok, that makes more sense re: the air sack. Although, the more I think about it, I'll probably stick to my 8-12 hours. I'd rather get them in asap than hold up the whole batch on a couple of eggs with detached air sack. The egg carton in the hatcher, though...that one I think I'm going to try...

Not Turning Shipped Eggs For the First Three Days....Why?

I'm going to have to try that with the next batch of shipped eggs. I've always thought that 8-12 was the way to go, but I'm up for new ideas! I'd like to use cartons to hatch, (I hate watching the new chicks punting the pips all over while they're getting their legs under them!), but I was...

Who says you can't make a bit of change with chickens?

Are you serious? No wonder everyone seems to have them now....geez! Ya know, I think people have a right to do whatever they'd like with their money assuming it doesn't hurt anyone, but this is one thing I really don't understand. Good for the folks who are getting that much at auction for...

Who says you can't make a bit of change with chickens?

The last time I really paid attention to this kind of thing, it was the Marans that were reeling in the big bucks. Now you can't swing a stick without whacking Marans eggs for sale. Makes you wonder what the gold rush does to the quality of the breed. I wonder how common these Orps are going...

Who says you can't make a bit of change with chickens?

I'm really curious to see what happens in the last 5 mins of this one. The last batch sold for $460. What exactly do these hens lay?

Hens not letting you take eggs out of nest box?

The spatula idea makes a heck of a lot of sense, but the visual I got reading that... Are you ever tempted to give them a good flip? I'd rarely been whacked so bad that it broke the skin, but it's not pleasant! What I do is just slip my hand under her and grab that egg as quickly as...

Does corn scratch really help maintain egg production?

Another thing about corn - the whole "hot" thing really only applies to ruminants. Food ingested by ruminants will start to ferment in the rumen, one of the many "stomachs" you hear about in cows, goats and a few other animals. This helps the animal break down cellulosic foods like grasses and...

Not Turning Shipped Eggs For the First Three Days....Why?

Lol!! That sounds like my 60-something dad. He is now convinced that he's getting Alzheimer's. I just think he's getting wiser with age...he's always been forgetful, but now, he's finally realizing it!

    Chicks Arriving 2/22 !!!!

Someone had mentioned that they called MMcM with this concern, but the hatchery was well aware of this. They said that for 2/20 orders, those chicks just went into the incubators a day late, and will shipped on Tues so they don't spend an extra day in the postal system.

    Second order from McMurray, DEAD

And now I'll scratch yours! lol! But yeah, I agree here. It isn't a prefect system, or even a really good one. And I really can empathize with the heartache of opening a 4-5 day old box of dead and dying chicks. It made me wish I could present the box of dead babies to the moron/s responsible...
