    Day-old sexing

Hey everyone! We had two chicks hatch yesterday. Welsummer roo and Buff Orpington hen. The millefleur d’uccle is just the surrogate broody hen. They look very different from each other so I think it’s safe to say I have one of each. Any ideas? chick #1 chick #2

    June Hatch-A-Long

Just hatched yesterday- about 10 hours apart! They are awfully cute and we are dying to know the sex! We don’t have a rooster but one of our hens (Mary Kate- the millefleur d’uccle) has been chronically broody this spring. These eggs were acquired from a neighbor and they are supposedly...

    3 chicks

I had heard this before and figured as much. Can’t wait to see what color eggs. (If, in fact, I have a pullet)

    3 chicks

I was thinking the brown/black one with the “eyeliner” was the Sussex. But if that is the one with green legs, it would be my EE and the light tan/grey one is my wyandotte?

    3 chicks

got 3 chicks from the hatchery. About 4 weeks now... supposed to be an Americauna, Blue laced red Wyandotte, and barred rock. Suspecting the Wyandotte is actually a speckled Sussex and possible a Roo. Anyone care to have a look and weigh in?

Hen looking thin- is this normal?

Really helpful, thank you! How pronounced is the keel bone supposed to be? Vent looks clean and poop is normal as far as I can tell.

Hen looking thin- is this normal?

I have an Amber White hen (less than a year old) and she’s looking a little on the thin side. It’s entirely possible that I’m imagining it because it’s not drastic. She’s laying well for this time of year and she’s the only one in the flock who looks like they’ve lost weight. Could it be a...

Is my chicken eating her eggs or...?

Thanks so much for the insight! All my girls are laying but they lay at different times in the day. She’s a sex link with pretty high production expectancy— but we are pretty far north in Seattle and I wonder if shortening days are playing into our egg slow down? I will definitely try the...

Is my chicken eating her eggs or...?

I have a 6 month old Amber White who was an egg-a-day layer who has recently tapered off to every other day or every three days. When we do get an egg it usually has a hole or is misshapen (kind of smooshed-looking). We can’t figure out what’s causing her slow down in production or the holes-...

Arcaunas vs Americanas vs. Easter Eggers

How can you tell the difference? I was told that I was getting an Americana from the little boutique feed store here in Seattle. But I’ve also read about a million different places that most birds from the feed shops are actually Easter Eggers. This particular urban feed store does tend to carry...

    Integration Issues?

I’m having a similar issue! Just integrated an 8 wk EE with my 5 newly laying 6 month old girls. The existing flock is mixed breed and a mix of bantys and standards so I figured size wouldn’t be much of an issue. They are all being TERRIBLE to the new gal. Cornering her and taking turns...

    Whose egg?

Hi there! First time chicken mama here and when I woke up today I was thrilled to see I had my first 4 eggs! I have a flock of 6: 2 Mille flier Belgian d’uccles, 1 silver sebright bantam, 1 easter egger, 1 Amber white, and 1 bantam buff Brahma. 2 girls are squatting and 1 is crowing (?). Is...

How much feather loss is normal?

First time chicken mama here. I have a flock of six girls- they’re all about 4 months old and haven’t started laying yet. I’ve noticed some downy feathers in the bottom of their coop and in the yard where they free range- is this normal? None of them have any bald spots or are showing signs of...

Buff Brahma? He or she? Mystery bantam 8 wks

Hatched this little one from a bantam egg grab bag. Sweetest little one. Any ideas on breed or gender? Fuzzy legs (not feet) and the comb has just started getting a little pinker.
